After his release from prison, Eddie Kagle is killed by his partner, Smiley Williams. He finds himself in Hell, where a sly figure named Nick offers him a way out and a chance to settle an old score, but only if he helps with a problem that gnaws at Nick’s power. Kagle bears a striking resemblance to Judge Frederick Parker, a principled man whose honesty gnaws at Nick because it could threaten the governor’s race. Nick proposes a dangerous swap: Kagle’s soul would be transferred into Parker’s body long enough to ruin Parker’s reputation and clear the path for Nick’s ambitions.
Once Kagle steps into Parker’s life, strange and ironic consequences begin to unfold. His attempts at revenge often backfire in ways that make Parker look better, even as Kagle’s ruthless actions ripple through the judge’s world. Along the way, Kagle falls for Parker’s fiancée, Barbara Foster, a development that deepens his internal conflict and pushes him toward a surprising rebellion against Nick’s control.
Nick offers one more option—shoot Williams—but Kagle chooses a different path: he confronts Williams with the truth, forcing Williams to confront the danger of exposure. Williams, terrified, backs away and falls from an open window to his death, a moment that seems to seal Kagle’s fate and complicate Nick’s plans.
With nothing to pin on him since the swap, Kagle is tempted to stay and help troubled youths, even envisioning a life with Barbara while continuing Parker’s mission. Yet Nick insists that every moment Kagle remains in Parker’s life robs the real judge and Barbara of their rightful future. Reluctantly, Kagle bids farewell, relinquishes Parker’s body, and watches the couple share a tearful reunion.
Back in Hell, Nick resumes control and promises harsher punishment for Kagle. In a strategic twist, Kagle refuses to vanish into oblivion: he blackmails Nick, demanding to be made a trusty in exchange for keeping Nick’s blunders quiet. With no other choice, Nick agrees to the arrangement, leaving both men in a tense, uneasy balance as Parker’s life improves and the cycle of punishment and moral reckoning continues.
