Read the complete plot breakdown of Bruce Almighty (2003), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Bruce Nolan, portrayed by Jim Carrey, is a TV news reporter stuck covering trivial fluff pieces in Buffalo, New York. The film kicks off with him in a bakery, his spidery hairnet awkwardly perched over his forehead, as he reports on the city’s largest cookie. However, his luck seems to dwindle as he faces frustrating traffic while racing back to the station. His day spirals downhill as he arrives late to a critical meeting, where co-workers, including his rival Evan Baxter, portrayed by Steve Carrell, mock his silly bakery coverage. With a penchant for dark humor, Bruce pleads with his boss, Jack Baylor, played by Philip Baker Hall, for a chance at the vacant anchor position.

Living alongside his girlfriend, Grace Connelly, played by Jennifer Aniston, Bruce’s world further crumbles when he learns that Evan has snagged the anchor job while he’s assigned to cover a feature at Niagara Falls. Following an explosive meltdown on-camera, he gets unceremoniously fired. Consumed by rage, he embarks on a drive, fervently shaking his prayer beads and hurling a tempest of curses at the heavens. As rain pours, he crosses the highway in a fit, flinging the beads into the lake.

The next morning, Bruce’s misfortunes continue as his beeper emits a relentless shriek. Irritated, he hurls it into the street, only for it to be flattened yet still persist in its beeping. Frustrated, Bruce calls the number, leading him to a tape from someone who knows everything about his life. Curious and skeptical, he heads to the address given, arriving at a deserted warehouse where he finds an African American janitor, played by Morgan Freeman, mopping the floor.

After a bit of sarcastic banter about direction, Bruce discovers the elevator to the seventh floor is out of order and has to endure climbing the stairs. Upon arriving at a bright, empty room, he calls out for assistance, and the janitor astonishingly descends from a ladder, removing his coveralls to reveal an immaculate white suit and tie—presenting himself as none other than God.

God reveals a file cabinet that stores every moment of Bruce’s life, pulling Bruce across the room with its weight. With a swift shift, God decides to grant Bruce all His powers, challenging him to see if he can do a better job. As Bruce steps outside, chills rush down his spine when he realizes he can walk across puddles and command his car to start with mere words. The whimsical fantasy of being Clint Eastwood becomes instant reality.

Testing the limits of his newfound abilities at a diner, Bruce attempts to part his bowl of tomato soup, creating comedic chaos. He grows increasingly confident in his god-like powers, seeking retribution against those who bullied him and whimsically transforming his wardrobe. After bringing a peculiar bouquet to Grace and indulging in fantastical romance that dramatically alters her appearance, Bruce starts missing the depth of their connection.

In his newfound glory, Bruce aims to locate the infamous Jimmy Hoffa, enjoying a triumphant return to reporting amidst applause at the station. His antics, however, reach a peak when he uses his powers irresponsibly, granting every lottery prayer and triggering a bewildering outcome that leaves chaos in its wake.

Feeling the pressure of listening to prayers pouring in from around the world, Bruce becomes overwhelmed and tries to answer them all in one impulsive action that leads to disastrous results. In despair, he finds himself atop Mt. Everest with God, who reveals the destruction Bruce has wrought through selfish use of his powers. God instructs him to “be the miracle” for change to occur.

As Bruce’s professional life takes a turn for celebration with his promotion, his relationship with Grace crumbles. Determined to win her back, he clashes with God’s rule of respecting free will when trying to orchestrate a reunion, ultimately leading to more confusion.

Returning to the warehouse, Bruce meets the janitor once more, who hands him a mop and reinforces the importance of humility and accountability. With clarity, Bruce mends fences with Evan and refocuses on meaningful stories, all the while realizing the paramount importance of serving others rather than pursuing selfish desires.

After a heartfelt epiphany when he learns Grace still cares for him, Bruce adventures through the city in search of her prayers. A rush of painful clarity hits him as he senses her despair, leading him to kneel in anguish amidst traffic—only to be struck by a truck.

From there, Bruce finds himself in a spiritual realm conversing with God, who teaches him the essence of prayer. The awakening thrusts him back onto the road, where he’s revived by EMTs. Eventually, back home and reflecting on his journey in a hospital bed, Grace enters with warmth and forgiveness.

In a twist of serendipity, Bruce returns to the bakery where everything began, now overshadowed by a massive cookie formed as a hypodermic needle to promote a blood drive. As a bustling crowd gathers, Bruce joyfully announces his engagement to Grace, concluding his quest for fulfillment.
