Born without a soul due to a Heaven error in 1858, Adam “Duke” Byron grows up in Glacier, Montana as a saloon keeper and gambling hall owner. The Book of Destiny says he should marry a minister’s daughter in 1885 and set a fine moral example, yet fate has a rougher script. In 1887, Michael is sent to steer him toward that destined path, but he must do so as a human being, without miracles.
Bill Plummer, Duke’s rival in the saloon business and a partner in a mining venture, triggers a chain of trouble when a dispute leaves the town destitute. Plummer hires the infamous Kansas City Kid to kill Duke, hoping to wipe the competition away. When Duke learns of the plan, he assumes Michael is the Kid, and a tense misunderstanding sparks danger for the young townsfolk. Meanwhile, Duke’s occult-linked associate, Treason, fires a shot at Michael, narrowly missing a young girl. The moment explodes when the parson’s daughter and schoolteacher, Drusilla Wainwright, storms into the Copper Queen saloon and slaps Duke, a confrontation that sets the moral tone for what follows.
The town’s residents, led by Sheriff Matt Bodine, want swift vigilante justice, but the lawman persuades them to wait and see who destroys whom first. Michael accidentally foils the Kansas City Kid’s attempt to shoot Duke, and Duke, misled about who Michael really is, decides to hire him, sensing a clever, ambitious ally. Duke’s associate Ginger, the Copper Queen herself, shows a surprising fondness for Michael, while Treason continues to oppose them.
A deadly blaze erupts when Plummer traps Duke inside his own saloon and waits for him to emerge. Duke’s secret passage is locked from the outside, but Michael opens it, letting Duke escape to the school with his life. As they wait for darkness, Duke speaks of a larger purpose: “meant for something… something big, something important.” > “meant for something… something big, something important” Drusilla Wainwright listens, and a fragile bond begins to form between them. Duke’s rescue of Speck O’Donnell, a sickly child Duke has come to care for, comes just as Treason, who miraculously survives the blaze, returns to ignite more trouble.
In a climactic showdown for sole ownership of the mine, Sheriff Bodine coordinates events that push Duke and Plummer toward each other. Speck runs to Duke as Judd, a self-sacrificing figure who is shot saving the boy, dies and, in a quiet moment, recognizes Michael. With Plummer dead, a mob prepares to lynch Duke, but Drusilla urges him to flee with her. Duke refuses to abandon Mike, and she agrees to come along only if she can, which she does. The mob reconsiders, turning their anger toward Michael, but his horse won’t move, delaying the lynching.
At the last moment, Duke rides back with Drusilla to save Mike’s life and to reform him, and Treason mysteriously vanishes. That night, Michael rides away on a special coach to Heaven, taking Speck with him, while Speck’s mother clings to the hope that her child’s fate has found its place.
