A newspaper refuses to print the truth behind Parker's death. Sportswriter Wally Matson resigns in protest over censorship. He learns the editor has been paid off to keep silent, sparking his crusade against corruption.

Wally vows to clean up the amateur boxing scene by exposing the corruption. He lands a job at a small newspaper and uses it to champion reform. His new position gives him a platform to pursue change.

Wally persuades the publisher to sponsor a legitimate amateur boxing tournament. This marks a turning point toward transparency and fair competition.

Wally personally invites amateur Billy Crane to participate in the tournament's opening match. He hopes Billy's presence will help draw attention to the reform effort.

Billy, who is in love with Mary Parker, declines to fight in order to avoid conflict with her. His decision jeopardizes the plan to showcase the new, clean competition.

To win Billy over, Wally takes Mary out for dinner and shares his tough childhood and how boxing offered a path to hope. Mary gives him her blessing to enter the tournament, removing the obstacle to Billy's participation.

Taggerty, the promoter, is unhappy with the new reform effort. He lies to Billy, telling him that Wally only wants Mary and that the two of them have already been on a date.

Taggerty pays professional boxer Cliff Stanton to enter the tournament posing as an amateur. His plan is to sabotage the legitimacy of the competition by fielding a professional.

In the opening bout, Billy Crane faces Stanton. Inspired by Mary's vow of everlasting love, Billy defeats Stanton fair and square, exposing Taggerty's deceit. The victory proves the reform effort can work.
