During a local amateur boxing prizefight, Joey Parker is fatally beaten, and there is no credible official explanation for what happened. His sister, Mary Parker, becomes a strong opponent of boxing and everything it stands for.
A newspaper refuses to print the truth behind Parker’s death, so sportswriter Wally Matson resigns in protest.
The deeper truth is that Parker was just one of many boys used by boxing promoter Joe Taggerty, who has bribed Wally’s editor to keep silent.
Wally vows to clean up the amateur boxing scene by exposing the corruption. He lands a job at a small newspaper and persuades the publisher to sponsor a legitimate tournament.
Wally personally invites amateur Billy Crane to participate in the tournament’s opening match. Billy is in love with Parker’s sister, so he declines.
To win over Mary, he shares his difficult childhood and explains how boxing gave hope to friends as a path to a better future. Mary gives her permission for Billy to enter the tournament.
Taggerty is unhappy, believing this fresh tournament will eventually put him out of business.
Taggerty goes further to sabotage the event by paying a professional boxer, Cliff Stanton, to enter it posing as an amateur.
Taggerty’s deceit is exposed when Billy is set to fight Stanton, and Billy defeats him in a clean bout, inspired by Mary’s unwavering love.
Thanks to the exposure of the deceit, the Golden Gloves amateur tournament gains national acclaim.
