Chellappa [Jayaram] runs a small village photo studio and shares a simple, close-knit life with his friends. The quiet is gently disrupted when Mary moves into a house opposite Gokulam, a residence owned by the respected Kalyan Kumar [Kalyan Kumar], who lives there with his wife and daughter Uma. Kalyan Kumar also has a son, Kannan, who was driven away after marrying a girl against the family’s wishes. Although his father has since softened, Kannan never returns home, and many in the village believe the rift is caused by his wife, not by him.
Mary quickly endears herself to the Gokulam clan, even taking singing lessons with Kalyan Kumar and offering help whenever needed. It is not long before Chellappa falls in love with her and musters the courage to propose. Mary’s response shocks him, and she reveals a past identity that changes everything: Gayathri, a talented singer who comes from a wealthy background but has no immediate family apart from a guardian who has his own plans for her future. Gayathri is drawn to Kannan, who returns her feelings, and the couple begin to dream of a life together.
The guardian imagines a union between Gayathri and his own son Vasanth [S. N. Vasanth], and the arrangement seems perfect—until jealousy and fear ignite. Vasanth, pushed by a sense of pride and control, orchestrates danger and sends thugs to kill Kannan. A brutal confrontation follows, and Kannan is fatally stabbed at the wedding function, dying in front of Gayathri as the crowd looks on in shock.
Gayathri’s guardian then uses the nerve-wracking turn of events to trap the family, while Gayathri privately wrestles with her own sense of responsibility. She writes to Kannan’s parents, claiming that their son had wed against their wishes, and she begins to send money orders in Kannan’s name from Chennai to his parents, creating the impression that the couple is living a long, happy life in the city. Chellappa, touched by the sacrifice and loyalty, chooses not to reveal the truth, and the family slowly accepts the new, painful reality.
Uma’s upcoming wedding becomes a new pressure point. Gayathri learns that Uma once had a lover who has since resurfaced, threatening to expose old photographs and ruin the marriage. Determined to protect Uma, Gayathri goes to the lover’s home alone to retrieve the photographs. She finds them and burns them, but the situation explodes when the man tries to molest her. Chellappa intervenes, rescuing her as the crowd gathers. The lover spins a tale of impropriety between Chellappa and Gayathri, shocking the village and forcing Gayathri to shoulder the blame for her actions. The townspeople condemn her, and she is asked to leave.
Despite opposition, Gayathri asks to stay for one day so she can witness Uma’s wedding before departing. She attends the ceremony but is publicly rebuked by Kannan’s father, and heartbroken, she leaves the village to embark on a world tour with a friend.
Chellappa finally reveals the full truth to Kannan’s father, and they realize their earlier judgments. They hurry to Gayathri’s home, only to find she has already departed. The film closes on a poignant note: Kannan’s father waits at the village railway station each morning, hoping for Gayathri’s return, a quiet testament to a love that never fully fades and a family that must learn to forgive.
