Gokulam

Chellappa lives in a small village and runs a photo studio with his friends. The narrative establishes a close-knit community where everyday routines set the tone for the story. This calm is gently challenged as new relationships begin to form.

Mary arrives and rents a house opposite the Gokulam family. She quickly befriends them and lends a hand whenever needed. Her presence deepens the ties within the community and introduces a new warmth to the village.

Chellappa falls in love with Mary and confesses his love. Mary reveals a painful flashback to Chellappa, shocking him and hinting at a past far different from his assumptions. The moment marks the beginning of a complicated bond between them.

Mary's true name is Gayathri, a wealthy girl with no parents except for a guardian. Gayathri and Kannan love each other, but her guardian plans to marry her to his son, Vasanth. Kannan asks to postpone the wedding for his family, and Gayathri agrees, setting up the planned engagement.

An engagement is arranged for Gayathri's birthday, but Vasanth learns of the match and sends thugs to kill Kannan. They clash at the function, and Kannan is stabbed and dies in front of Gayathri. The tragedy cements a sense of guilt and urgency in the surrounding family.

Gayathri's guardian delivers Vasanth to the police, and he is jailed. To support Kannan's family, Gayathri writes letters in Kannan's name to his parents and sends monthly money orders, keeping them convinced that he lives in Chennai with a wife. She also comes to the village under the alias Mary to maintain the ruse.

Uma's wedding is arranged, and Gayathri learns Uma's former lover is blackmailing her with old photos. Gayathri goes to the lover's home, retrieves the photos, and burns them. The man tries to molest Gayathri, but Chellappa rescues her, and a crowd later spreads a rumor linking Chellappa and Gayathri.

The village asks Gayathri to vacate, but she pleads to stay for Uma's wedding. She attends the ceremony and is insulted by Kannan's father. Dejected, she decides to leave the village and pursue a world tour.

Chellappa informs Kannan's father of all the truth surrounding Gayathri's identity and the deception. They realize their mistake and rush to Gayathri's house to reconcile. However, they discover she has already left.

Gayathri's decision to tour the world marks a new chapter as she travels with her friend and performs stage shows. The choice comes after enduring the village's judgment and personal sacrifice. Her departure signals a bittersweet end to her presence in the village.

The film closes with Kannan's father waiting at the village railway station every morning for Gayathri's return. His quiet vigil captures the lingering ache of the unresolved love and the family’s loss. The ending leaves the door open to Gayathri’s possible return.
