Mae, Nirina Zubir, a tomboy, shares a village near Jakarta with three male friends: Aming Sugandhi as Eman, Ringgo Agus Rahman as Beni, and Deddy Mahendra Desta as Guntoro. Each of them struggles with unfulfilled goals, and Mae’s parents—Jaja Mihardja as Pak Mardi and Meriam Bellina as Bu Mardi—grow worried that Mae has never embraced femininity or started a career, a combination they fear could make her less desirable to potential husbands. They also worry that Mae’s close friendship with her male companions might complicate any future suitors’ plans.
To nudge Mae toward a more conventional path, her parents arrange for teachers and even a young athlete to catch her interest. Mae, however, shows little interest in these advances and signals to her friends with a red handkerchief to drive the visitors away. When the athlete reports Mae’s reaction to his boss, Rendy, Richard Kevin arrives in the village. He is tall, handsome, wealthy, and well educated, and he falls in love with Mae at first sight. Mae’s protector, Eman, who is color blind, misreads the situation and, along with Beni and Guntoro, confronts Rendy to defend Mae’s perceived honor.
As Mae’s mother grows more worried about delaying the marriage, she falls ill and even threatens to return as a ghost. Mae responds with a promise to marry soon and asks Eman, Beni, and Guntoro to decide who should wed her. In a playful contest, Guntoro is initially chosen as the groom, but illness strikes both Guntoro and Eman, shifting the balance and leaving Beni as the chosen partner.
The plan is far from smooth, though. Rendy arrives with his motorcycle gang and clashes with the villagers in a bid to reclaim Mae’s hand. Mae steps into the fray in a wedding kebaya and uses her presence to help quell the clash. In the end, Rendy and Mae marry, with the motorcycle gang and the villagers in attendance, signaling a union born of love amid a tangle of pride, tradition, and community pressure. The story sits at the crossroads of humor and romance, inviting viewers to consider how families and friends navigate expectations around marriage and gender within a lively, close-knit village.
