The film’s main storyline follows Otík, János Bán a young man with mental illness living in a tight-knit village community. The sweet-tempered Otík works as a truck driver assistant to Pávek, Marián Labuda, his older colleague and practical-minded neighbor. With Otík under the care of Pávek’s family and his aunt Hrabětová, Milada Ježková whose parents are dead, the two coworkers share a daily routine, yet Otík’s simple tasks can become moments of friction. However, the two clash when Pávek demands that Otík be transferred to work with another driver, a man named Turek; Jiří Schmitzer plays okrskář Tlamicha, a choleric and suspicious figure.

Otík decides to seek a fresh start in Prague, but city life proves difficult and isolating. After this attempt, it is revealed that the transfer was a trick engineered by a crooked subordinate of the Dřevoplech company director to secure Otík’s large inherited house for his boss. The director of Dřevoplechu is Josef Somr.

Facing the manipulation, Pávek agrees to give Otík a second chance and travels to the city to bring him back, resuming their work together in the village.

Parallel to this main arc, the film follows several subplots that deepen the village’s texture: the secret romance of Turek’s wife with a young veterinarian; the misadventures and resilience of a doctor who is accident-prone yet widely respected, Rudolf Hrušínský as doctor, who battles his pessimistic patients as well as his car; and the bold actions of Pávek’s teenage son, Jarda Pávek, Stanislav Aubrecht, who has ardent feelings for a local teacher, Jana Turková, Libuše Šafránková. The local teacher is portrayed with depth, bringing a human face to the village’s interconnected lives.

Q1

Why was Otík transferred to work with Turek?

A.

Pávek proposed transferring Otík to work with Turek because Otík's inability to perform even simple tasks had created ongoing friction at work. Despite their genuine care for each other, Pávek grew frustrated as Otík consistently fell behind and misread instructions, and he believed switching Otík to another driver would resolve the practical problems in their daily routine.

The friction between Otík and Pávek at work is established early in the film, showing that their partnership, while affectionate, was strained by Otík's limitations.
