In this enchanting story, Mary Fiore (played by Jennifer Lopez), an ambitious wedding planner in San Francisco, is brought back together with her childhood acquaintance Massimo, a situation initiated by her father Salvatore. He harbors hopes of securing their engagement. Yet, Mary dismisses the idea of marriage and instead focuses her efforts on impressing her boss Geri in her quest to become a partner at their firm. When she’s assigned to organize the lavish wedding of catering heiress Fran Donolly to her longtime love, Eddie, Mary finds herself caught in the whirlwind of high-stakes planning while striving to establish herself as a leading event organizer.
As Mary navigates the challenges of managing Fran’s extravagant wedding, she encounters a series of unforeseen complications that test her both professionally and personally. A fateful meeting with the dashing stranger Steve Edison (a pediatrician) leads to a dramatic moment of rescue when a dumpster unexpectedly falls toward her. Under the stars at an outdoor movie screening, they share a spontaneous romantic moment that leaves Mary’s heart racing.
However, their fleeting romance takes a sharp turn when Fran reveals Steve is actually her fiancé, Eddie, leaving Mary feeling stunned and betrayed. Her trusted coworker, Penny, reminds her that her career must come first and urges her to keep moving forward with the wedding plans. Just as Mary grapples with her emotions, she bumps into Massimo once again, only to discover he is, in fact, her arranged fiancé, further complicating her already tumultuous world.
Amid growing tensions, Salvatore drops a surprising truth about his own marriage, emphasizing that even seemingly ideal relationships can rest on a framework of arrangements rather than genuine affection. This revelation sends Mary into a spiral of conflicting feelings as she struggles to reconcile her past with her current situation.
With Fran embarking on a week-long business trip, an opportunity arises for Mary and Steve to collaborate without their personal strife getting in the way. As they work together, they uncover the potential for friendship and trust amidst the confusion. This captivating story unfolds as Mary faces her feelings and goals while maneuvering through the tangled dynamics of love, family, and self-exploration.
After a night of emotional upheaval, Mary stumbles into her apartment, overwhelmed by loneliness. Memories of Keith’s betrayal and his impending fatherhood haunt her, adding to her distress. Steve offers her comfort and insight, suggesting she reconsider her past choices. When he expresses his feelings, Mary finds herself torn and ultimately chooses to uphold the respect she has for Fran by pushing him away.
Meanwhile, Fran struggles with her own uncertainties regarding Steve, leading Mary to urge her friend to commit to the wedding plans. As both couples ready themselves for their respective nuptials, Mary is unexpectedly attracted to Massimo’s charming proposal, ultimately accepting despite her doubts. The stage is set for a dual wedding ceremony, with Mary and Massimo alongside Fran and Steve.
As the wedding day draws near, Steve becomes suspicious and confronts Fran about their upcoming marriage. To his astonishment, she confesses her reluctance to go through with the wedding and opts for a solo honeymoon instead. This revelation prompts Steve to take swift action to stop Mary from marrying Massimo.
On the day of their wedding, just as Mary is about to say “I do,” her father intervenes. He recognizes that this union doesn’t reflect her true desires. Although Mary contemplates the practicality of the marriage, declaring that life isn’t a fairy tale, she ultimately realizes Massimo is not her true match. With a heavy heart, she steps away.
When Steve arrives at the town hall to confront Massimo and Salvatore, he learns the ceremony will never happen, as Salvatore understands Mary’s true feelings lie elsewhere. Encouraged by Salvatore, Steve embarks on a chase to connect with Mary. Upon finding her, he asks her to dance under the stars, and as they share a passionate kiss, the chemistry between them ignites, finally syncing their hearts in a moment of genuine connection.
