During the 1993 Bombay riots, Amaan Ikramullah goes missing after witnessing the brutal murder of his friend Firoz. His mother Nishatbi Ikramullah and his elder sister Fiza Ikramullah are left devastated but strive to hold out hope that he will return.
By 1999, after six years of uncertainty, Fiza grows weary of waiting and resolves to search for her brother. She pursues every possible lead through legal channels, media exposure, and political contacts, encountering a wide range of people and revelations along the way that test her resolve and redefine what family means to her.
She learns that Amaan had once pleaded with a police officer Savita Prabhune for help, only to be dismissed with a brusque suggestion to go to Pakistan—a remark that left a mark and haunted him. He was later assaulted but managed to escape. Meanwhile, his former girlfriend Shehnaz, who had remained hopeful for his return, is eventually compelled to marry another man, Salim, under familial pressure.
Guided by a lead from Anirudh Roy, who suspects a link between Amaan and a militant cell near the Rajasthan border, Fiza tracks her brother down. She is stunned to learn that Amaan has joined a terrorist organization. He recounts the trauma of the riots and explains how he was recruited by Murad Khan, who had rescued him during his darkest hour, and how that rescue set him on a dangerous path.
Moved by his sister’s plea, Amaan agrees to return home and is finally reunited with Nishatbi, bringing a fragile moment of relief to the family. Back in Mumbai, they face the paradox of rebuilding a life that was split apart by violence and fear, as Amaan struggles to reintegrate into ordinary work and ordinary society.
Seeking to stabilize the family, Anirudh Roy reveals that he has feelings for Fiza and hopes to marry her — a prospect that Amaan, in a gesture of generosity, accepts. Yet career doors remain closed as employers repeatedly reject him because of his past, making the path toward a normal life feel distant and uncertain, and tempting him to reconsider his ties to Murad’s network.
Eventually, he reveals his past affiliations to his family and the police; the disclosure shatters Nishatbi, who cannot bear the loss of her son’s innocence and dies by suicide, a tragedy that compounds the family’s grief.
Encouraged by Murad, Amaan agrees to carry out an assassination mission targeting two politicians known for inciting communal hatred—the same figures who had once sought to exploit Fiza during her search. After completing the killings, he is betrayed by his own group and barely escapes.
Fiza tracks him down as the police close in. Overwhelmed by guilt and convinced he has no future, Amaan pleads with Fiza to end his life. In a final, heartbreaking act, she shoots her brother to grant him what she believes is a dignified death.
