What Happens in First Love: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of First Love (1971) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In 19th-century Russia, Princess Zasekina Wanda Łuczycka and her daughter Zinaida Magdalena Zawadzka move in next door to Alexander, a 16-year-old boy whose world begins to tilt with their arrival. Alexander falls deeply in love with Zinaida, a feeling that grows even as she attracts the gaze of several men, among them Count Malewski Andrzej Hrydzewicz, Doctor Luzhin Edward Linde-Lubaszenko, and the poet Maidanov. The initial warmth from Zinaida mingles with an air of mystery, and the family dynamics around Alexander become tangled as his affections deepen.

Zinaida’s aloofness initially masks a more complex response to the young suitor. Her behavior shifts—at times she seems to reciprocate, at others she withholds—leaving Alexander caught between longing and doubt. Meanwhile, his mother disapproves of the match, concerned by the daughter of a financially troubled family, even as his father remains outwardly indifferent or perhaps supportive of the attachment. The tension between admiration and reproach shapes Alexander’s days, and the study of his infatuation begins to consume his nights as he quietly watches and hopes.

As years pass, the emotional grip intensifies. Alexander’s fixation leads him to spy on Zinaida at night, a perilous curiosity that yields a painful revelation: his father has been secretly involved with Zinaida. The discovery wounds him deeply, wounding his trust and complicating the fragile web of loyalties that has formed around him. Zinaida, in turn, toys with his feelings, manipulating them and treating him alternately as a child and as a lover, a pattern that deepens his uncertainty and heartache.

Despite the looming consequences and his mother’s suspicions, Alexander’s fixation endures. He learns that Zinaida ultimately marries Doctor Luzhin after bearing a child from the affair, a turn that reshapes the fate of everyone involved. His father’s warnings about women echo in his ears, yet they fail to dull the intensity of his longing. In the end, the hope he once held for a shared future with Zinaida is crushed when he discovers that she dies in childbirth, leaving behind a sorrowful legacy of what might have been.

First Love Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about First Love (1971): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Zinaida give Alexander mixed signals?

Zinaida's behavior shifts between warmth and distance because she is emotionally conflicted. While she enjoys the attention from the young Alexander, she also recognizes the futility of his devotion. Her inconsistent responses reflect both her genuine curiosity about him and her complicated circumstances as a young woman in a financially struggling family with multiple suitors. She treats him alternately as a child and as a potential lover, which keeps him hopeful but uncertain.

Q2

How did Alexander discover his father's affair with Zinaida?

Alexander discovered the affair through his own spying. As his obsession with Zinaida grew, he began watching her at night from outside her residence. During these nighttime vigils, he witnessed interactions between his father and Zinaida that revealed their secret relationship. This painful discovery shattered his idealized view of both his father and the woman he loved.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Alexander's father appeared indifferent to his son's fixation, which hints at his own hidden involvement.

Q3

Why does Zinaida marry Doctor Luzhin?

Zinaida marries Doctor Luzhin after becoming pregnant from an affair, implied to be with Alexander's father. The marriage provides her with social respectability and financial security, which was important given her family's financially troubled status. Doctor Luzhin, as a respectable professional, offered a legitimate cover for her pregnancy and a stable future for her child.

Q4

What happens to Zinaida at the end?

Q5

Why does Alexander's mother disapprove of his feelings for Zinaida?

Alexander's mother disapproves because she recognizes Zinaida as the daughter of a financially troubled family. In 19th-century Russian society, this made her an unsuitable match for their household. The mother's instinct proves prophetic, as Zinaida's complicated situation ultimately leads to heartbreak and tragedy.

Q6

Why does Alexander's father warn him about women while having an affair?

Alexander's father warns his son about women even as he conducts his own secret affair with Zinaida. This hypocrisy highlights the gap between his spoken morality and his actual behavior. The warning reveals his awareness of the dangers he himself succumbed to, yet he cannot restrain his own actions. It deepens Alexander's sense of betrayal after discovering the affair.

Foreshadowing: The father's initial indifference to Alexander's obsession foreshadows his own hidden involvement.

Q7

Why does Zinaida toy with Alexander's feelings?

Zinaida manipulates Alexander's emotions partly because she enjoys the power she holds over him, and partly because she is genuinely conflicted about her own feelings. She treats him as both a child and a potential lover depending on her mood. Her behavior may also stem from her difficult circumstances, being pursued by many men while her family faces financial ruin leaves her emotionally unstable.

Q8

What is the main theme of First Love?

The main theme is the painful nature of unrequited love and the loss of innocence. Alexander's obsessive devotion to Zinaida consumes his youth, yet she never truly returns his feelings. The story explores how youthful passion can be both illuminating and destructive, leaving lasting wounds. The tragic ending, Zinaida dying in childbirth, underscores how this one-sided love fundamentally shapes Alexander's life.
