What Happens in Careless: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Careless (1962) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Emilio Brentani, Anthony Franciosa, a man nearing forty, has spent most of his life among ideas and books and now longs for a short-term relationship with no responsibilities. He seeks to imitate his friend Stefano Balli, Philippe Leroy, a successful womanizer, and to relive the adventures he has read about but never experienced. He meets the younger Angiolina Zarri, Claudia Cardinale, a beautiful and vivacious woman whom he perceives as free and innocent, and he hopes to educate her in the ways of the world and erode her naivety.

He happily tells his sister Amalia Brentani, Betsy Blair, with whom he lives, about the encounter. She cautions him not to do anything stupid and asks if the lady is honest.

A colleague drops hints that Angiolina may not be the “little angel” her name suggests to be, and photos in her home suggest she has known a number of men. Progressive observations of Angiolina around Trieste reveal her with multiple men.

During a restaurant visit, Angiolina also develops an instant rapport with Stefano Balli, Philippe Leroy, and he persuades her to pose for him as a model in his work as a sculptor.

Meanwhile, Amalia Brentani, Betsy Blair, develops an infatuation with the talented Stefano. When Emilio stops Stefano from seeing her any more, it sets off tragic consequences that ripple through their lives.

Careless Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Careless (1962): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Emilio continue pursuing Angiolina after learning about her multiple lovers?

Emilio is approaching 40 and longs for the adventurous life he's only read about in books. He sees Angiolina as his chance to experience the thrill and passion he's missed. Even when colleagues warn him and he discovers evidence of her past relationships, he cannot abandon his fantasy of shaping her into the innocent ideal he's imagined. His pride and desire for the idealized version of her override his better judgment.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Emilio explicitly tells his sister he wants to 'educate' Angiolina in the ways of the world, showing his paternalistic obsession from the start.

  • fantasy
  • jealousy

Q2

Why does Amalia develop feelings for Stefano?

Amalia has lived a quiet, sheltered life caring for her brother Emilio. When she encounters Stefano Balli, a talented and charismatic sculptor, she experiences something entirely new. His artistic success and magnetic personality represent everything missing from her mundane existence. Stefano represents excitement and a potential escape from her routine, making her infatuation understandable despite the complications it creates.

Foreshadowing: Emilio mentions wanting to imitate Stefano's womanizing lifestyle, establishing Stefano as a magnetic figure worth emulating.

  • infatuation
  • attraction

Q3

Why does Emilio intervene to stop Stefano from seeing Amalia?

Emilio believes he is protecting his sister from harm. Having already seen how Stefano cycles through women and understanding his manipulative nature, Emilio fears Amalia will become another victim of Stefano's womanizing. However, his interference also stems from control issues and perhaps jealousy, Stefano represents everything Emilio aspires to be, and allowing him into the family feels threatening.

Foreshadowing: Emilio's own pursuit of Angiolina mirrors Stefano's methods, making his judgment of Stefano somewhat hypocritical.

Q4

What are the tragic consequences that unfold after Emilio stops Stefano?

Emilio's attempt to intervene in the relationship creates a confrontation with Stefano and ruptures the fragile dynamics among the four characters. The exact nature of the tragedy involves the irreversible damage to Amalia's emotional state and potentially her physical wellbeing, as her hopes for connection with Stefano are crushed. This event marks the point of no return for the family, leading to their ultimate downfall.

Foreshadowing: The timeline notes hint at 'tragic consequences' when Amalia's infatuation with Stefano is disrupted, suggesting her emotional investment was significant.

Q5

How does Angiolina's relationship with Stefano develop?

During a restaurant visit, Angiolina instantly connects with Stefano Balli. Unlike Emilio who views her as a project to educate, Stefano sees her as a muse. He persuades her to pose as his model, blending art with their personal connection. This arrangement gives Angiolina both artistic validation and a new romantic interest, shifting the triangle dynamics significantly.

Foreshadowing: Stefano is established as a successful womanizer, making his quick rapport with Angiolina predictable given her nature.

Q6

How does Emilio's perception of Angiolina change throughout the story?

Initially, Emilio sees Angiolina as a free-spirited, innocent young woman worth educating. As he observes her with multiple men around Trieste, his idealized fantasy crumbles. Each discovery of her true nature, a woman with extensive romantic history, erodes his illusion. Yet instead of leaving, his obsession deepens, twisting into something darker than genuine affection.

Foreshadowing: The colleague's warning about Angiolina not being a 'little angel' provides the first crack in Emilio's fantasy.

Q7

What makes Stefano Balli central to the story's conflict?

Stefano Balli serves as both Emilio's role model and rival. As a successful sculptor and experienced womanizer, he embodies the adventurous lifestyle Emilio craves. When Angiolina is drawn to him and Amalia falls for him, Stefano becomes the catalyst that forces Emilio to confront his own hypocrisy. His presence intensifies every relationship in the triangle, making him essential to the tragic events.

Foreshadowing: Emilio explicitly states he wants to imitate Stefano, establishing him as the story's key influence.

  • influence
  • sculptor

Q8

Why does Amalia bear the brunt of the tragedy?

Amalia's emotional investment in Stefano makes her most vulnerable to the fallout. When Emilio forcibly removes Stefano from her life, she loses her only connection to excitement and possibility. The combination of rejected love, feeling controlled by her brother, and the destruction of her hopes creates devastating consequences for her character, making her the primary victim of the story's tragic events.

Foreshadowing: Amalia's initial warning to Emilio about doing 'something stupid' foreshadows her own later vulnerability.
