What Happens in The Girl from Trieste: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Girl from Trieste (1982) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Dino Romani, a comic book illustrator who lives by the sea near Trieste, sits at a beach café one morning to draw, when he sees the rescue of Nicole, a beautiful young woman who has tried to drown herself. He offers her a towel to cover herself, which she returns the next day and, in gratitude, makes love before she disappears. Both are struck by the encounter, and they cross paths at irregular intervals, but beyond her name, Nicole, he is left with evasions and fantasies about who she truly is. In addition to her unpredictable mood changes, he is disturbed by her tendency to attract male attention through sexual exhibitionism. She is revealed to be a patient in an open psychiatric hospital, unable to sustain a stable relationship, let alone marriage. When Dino accidentally learns this, he goes on a trip to Venice with his ex-wife. On his return, Nicole is worse, but his continued love for her leads him to suggest that she live with him. He takes her on a trip to Paris, where her facade of normality begins to crack. Back at his house she becomes impossible to live with, losing her grip on reality and cutting off all her hair. While he sits drawing at the beach café one morning, he sees her walk into the sea to drown herself.

Q2

How does Dino discover Nicole is a patient at the psychiatric hospital?

Dino accidentally learns that Nicole is a patient in an open psychiatric hospital. The revelation comes to him through external means rather than Nicole directly telling him. This discovery shocks him and forces him to reconsider everything about their relationship. He realizes her erratic behavior, disappearances, and unpredictable mood changes have a clinical explanation.

Foreshadowing: Her unpredictable mood changes and inability to sustain relationships had already hinted at deeper psychological issues.

  • nicole patient
  • mental health reveal
Q3

Why does Dino continue loving Nicole even after learning about her psychiatric condition?

Dino remains devoted to Nicole despite knowing she is a psychiatric patient because of the intense, electric connection they share from their first encounter. His love is passionate but also rooted in a desire to save her or fix her broken state. He convinces himself that his love might be strong enough to stabilize her or that being with him could help her recover. This determination leads him to suggest she move in with him, hoping proximity might improve her condition.

Foreshadowing: Even before learning her diagnosis, Dino is drawn to her intensity despite being unsettled by her behavior.

  • dino love
  • why he stays
  • devotion despite illness
Q4

What happens during the Paris trip that worsens Nicole's condition?

During the trip to Paris, Nicole's facade of normality begins to crack significantly. The stress of travel and being in an unfamiliar environment exposes her fragile mental state. The change of scenery that Dino hoped would help her instead accelerates her deterioration. Q5

Why does Nicole cut off all her hair?

Nicole cuts off all her hair as a visible sign that she has completely lost her grip on reality. This act occurs after returning from Paris, when she is living with Dino and her mental state has severely deteriorated. The hair cutting represents a complete breakdown in her sense of self and identity. Q7

Why does Nicole keep disappearing after their sexual encounters?

Nicole disappears abruptly after each of their trysts because she is unable to sustain stable relationships due to her psychiatric condition. Her pattern of sudden departures reflects her instability and inability to maintain emotional connections. Beyond her name, Nicole offers Dino only evasions and fantasies about who she truly is. These disappearances are not calculations but symptoms of her illness, leaving Dino constantly chasing a connection she cannot fully provide.

Q8

What is the significance of the beach and sea throughout the film?

The beach and sea serve as a recurring backdrop that mirrors Nicole's mental state and ultimate fate. The same beach where Dino first sees her rescue from drowning becomes the site of her final act. The sea represents both danger and release for Nicole, connecting her suicidal impulses to the water. For Dino, the beach represents his routine and artistic life, which becomes increasingly intertwined with Nicole's tragic journey toward the water.

Foreshadowing: The circular nature of the beach scenes, from rescue to final drowning, frames the entire story.

  • beach symbolism
  • sea meaning
  • water imagery
Q9

Why does Dino simply watch Nicole walk into the sea at the end?

Dino watches Nicole walk into the sea to drown himself because he is unable to stop her or save her from herself. By this point, her condition has deteriorated completely and she has made her choice. The tragedy lies in Dino's powerlessness despite his love and devotion throughout their relationship. He can only witness the conclusion he has feared since the day he saw her pulled from the water. The final scene completes the tragic arc of a man who could not keep someone he loved within ordinary boundaries.
