In New York City, a diligent janitor named Daryll Deever spends his evenings following television reports about Toni Sokolow, a sharp and dedicated news presenter who has captured his imagination. In the same building, Aldo—another janitor—loses his job after a clash with Mr. Long, a wealthy Vietnamese man whose rumored criminal ties cast a long shadow over the neighborhood. Hoping to help Aldo, Daryll confronts Mr. Long, only to learn that the firing may reflect more than a mere dispute: Aldo’s wartime experiences have bred xenophobic attitudes that may have played a role in his downfall. What begins as a bid to intervene becomes a delicate moral labyrinth about loyalty, prejudice, and the fragility of reputation.

One night, Mr. Long is found strangled, and the police quickly tighten their suspicion around both Aldo and Daryll. Aldo lies about his whereabouts that night and suddenly appears with more money than ever before, deepening the mystery. The authorities grow wary of Aldo’s newly inflated finances, while Daryll, who discovered the body and has an uneasy alibi, becomes a prime suspect as well. Meanwhile, Toni’s fiancé Joseph grows increasingly convinced that Daryll knows more than he admits. He tries to close the door on Daryll by turning up the heat in a deadly confrontation. In a cruel twist, Joseph is revealed to be the killer of Mr. Long, part of a larger operation that used Long’s network to help smuggle Jews out of the Soviet Union. When Long threatens to expose his criminal links, Joseph takes drastic action to silence him. The revelation shatters Toni’s world: she chooses to marry Joseph to secure her place in a world that suits her family’s expectations, even as her heart remains entangled with Daryll.

Seeking to salvage his relationship and prevent more bloodshed, Daryll agrees to a tense meeting arranged by Joseph who poses as Toni’s father. The rendezvous is staged at a different address, and when Daryll arrives, he is drawn into a brutal encounter at a deserted horse stable. The fight unfolds with a blend of grit and improvisation: Daryll uses his knowledge of animals and a surprising firecracker tactic to spark a stampede that disrupts Joseph’s assault. The struggle continues, and as police sirens loom, Joseph and his accomplice are forced back. An officer, Lt. Jacobs, shoots Joseph in a moment of staged danger, believing him to be armed. The scene resolves with Toni arriving, relief flooding her face as she embraces Daryll, grateful that he has survived and that their bond remains intact.
