In the largely unexplored landscape of the early American Occupation in Japan, following the country’s devastating defeat, Emperor narrates a fictionalized account inspired by the true story of US Army Brigadier General Bonner Frank Fellers, portrayed by Matthew Fox. Fellers faces the daunting task of probing the Emperor’s actions leading up to the war, particularly his involvement in the decision to attack Pearl Harbor within just ten days. This investigation comes with immense responsibility; Fellers, an avid admirer of Japan who has spent considerable time there before the war, must navigate this sensitive mission carefully to prevent a potential uprising or even more dire consequences.

Throughout his inquiry, Fellers interrogates notable Class-A War Criminals such as Wartime Prime Minister Hideki Tojo, former Prime Minister Konoe, and Koichi Kido, all while dealing with the hostility from a resentful populace and pressure from fellow American soldiers. Adding to the complexity of his mission is General Richter, played by Colin Moy, who is intent on sabotaging Fellers’ investigation to justify his own thirst for vengeance against the Emperor.
