Read the complete plot breakdown of Emperor (2013), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In the largely unexplored landscape of the early American Occupation in Japan, following the country’s devastating defeat, Emperor narrates a fictionalized account inspired by the true story of US Army Brigadier General Bonner Frank Fellers, portrayed by Matthew Fox. Fellers faces the daunting task of probing the Emperor’s actions leading up to the war, particularly his involvement in the decision to attack Pearl Harbor within just ten days. This investigation comes with immense responsibility; Fellers, an avid admirer of Japan who has spent considerable time there before the war, must navigate this sensitive mission carefully to prevent a potential uprising or even more dire consequences.

Throughout his inquiry, Fellers interrogates notable Class-A War Criminals such as Wartime Prime Minister Hideki Tojo, former Prime Minister Konoe, and Koichi Kido, all while dealing with the hostility from a resentful populace and pressure from fellow American soldiers. Adding to the complexity of his mission is General Richter, played by Colin Moy, who is intent on sabotaging Fellers’ investigation to justify his own thirst for vengeance against the Emperor. As Richter fervently conveys the American public’s demand for retribution, Fellers stands firm in his belief that “Revenge is not Justice.”

To assist in this critical task, Fellers is allotted a dedicated team, which includes Takahashi, portrayed by Masayoshi Haneda, who serves as both interpreter and chauffeur. Takahashi approaches his duties with unwavering commitment, despite initially facing indifference from Fellers, who is preoccupied not only with his investigation but also with the search for his pre-war love, Aya Shimada, played by Eriko Hatsune. Fellers had deliberately guided bombing missions away from her home, a detail that Richter threatens to exploit against him.

Rich in post-war tensions, Emperor presents a dramatic tableau featuring authentic period costumes and a stellar international cast, making it a compelling and insightful drama about the complexities of the Post-War Era. As Fellers delves deeper into the truths and lies of the past, the film examines the delicate balance between justice and revenge, encapsulating the tumultuous moral landscape of a devastated nation.
