Goshen, Indiana is a quiet, pastoral town that often feels small and insular, offering little to the restless energy of its teenagers. High school seniors Sarah, Anna Kendrick and Jillian, Tania Raymonde, have been best friends for so long that they can hardly remember when their bond began, yet their paths are clearly drawing them toward different futures. Growing up in Goshen, the two couldn’t be more different: Sarah is a standout student and athlete, while Jillian carries the weight of a rough home life and embraces mischief as a way to cope.
Sarah, whose attorney mother Maureen, Suzanne Lang, hasn’t been home much lately, strives for achievement on every front. Jillian, with a more chaotic world behind her, drinks in risk as a means to escape. The two are joined by Darla Tod, Olivia Dawn York, and together they work at a cafe/candy store run by Mr. Palomino, Dan Flannery, a place that serves as a small rallying point in their tightly wound town.
Despite their differing temperaments, both Sarah and Jillian crave something beyond Goshen’s boundaries. Jillian—more desperate to break free—confesses that she’s been meeting men online, hoping to land a suitor who will pull her away from Goshen, which sits about 25 miles southeast of South Bend, home to the University of Notre Dame. The dream of a bigger life feels within reach, even as the realities of their environment press in.
After a party, where Jillian has to fend off advances from Billy, Paul Wesley, the party’s host, Jillian vanishes without a trace. She leaves behind only a journal and a cryptic video message from her cellphone, a clue that seems both personal and perilous. As the town clams up, Sarah discovers that many people would rather pretend Jillian never existed. The police offer little help, and even Jillian’s mother Candy, Kinna McInroe, seems indifferent.
Because Jillian has run away before, many dismiss her disappearance as another retreat from reality. Yet Sarah senses there is something deeply wrong beneath the surface. Determined to uncover the truth, she digs into Jillian’s life and reaches out to Jasper, Chuck Carter, a fellow high school student and gifted computer coder who secretly harbors feelings for her. Their investigation relies on the enigmatic video Jillian left behind and a mysterious necklace she received from an online boyfriend.
As they connect dots, Sarah and Jasper begin to fear that Jillian may be the latest target of a predator who has been abducting and harming teenage girls in the area—victims whom the town would rather forget. The pair chase leads that cut through fear and denial, convinced that the missing girls are not just numbers but lives that deserve attention. Their pursuit brings them face to face with danger: Jasper is attacked, and someone starts stalking Sarah, threatening to end their inquiry before it can truly begin.
Still, Sarah remains resolute, driven to learn the truth behind Jillian’s disappearance. She pushes forward with courage, determined to reveal what happened to her friend and to any other girl who might have fallen through the cracks. Along the way, Sarah seeks out Patty Melville, Shannon Holt, a local woman whose daughter Janet has been missing for three years, hoping that the story of Janet might illuminate Jillian’s own fate. The investigation tightens around a network of secrecy and fear that seems to protect the town’s darkest secrets.
In a tense, relentless pursuit, the stakes escalate as the danger to Sarah and Jasper grows. Yet the duo refuses to back down, choosing to confront the shadows that hide in plain sight. Their courage and curiosity push them toward a truth that could upend the quiet life of Goshen, forcing the community to reckon with what has been overlooked for too long. As the pieces click into place, the question remains: will the truth redeem the memories of Jillian, or will it redefine the town’s sense of safety and belonging for good?
