What Happens in Thalavan: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Thalavan (2024) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The film opens with retired DYSP Udayabhanu, who has left the police force to host a popular television show that recounts real-life crime stories from his past. His program frames the room as viewers watch him narrate cases with calm restraint, offering a window into the darker corners of crime and investigation. The central focus arrives when he reluctantly agrees to cover the infamous Cheppanamthotta Case, a case that shocked the community and involved two police officers. The story then pivots to the events that led up to the case, beginning with Karthik, a Sub-Inspector known for his upright stance, who releases a man named Manu Das who had been caught in an attempted murder case but claimed it was self-defense. This decision sows discord within the police department, especially with Circle Inspector Jayashankar, who is more pragmatic in his approach.

As the narrative moves forward, Jayashankar confronts a personal nightmare: the lifeless body of Ramya, the wife of a man he had previously arrested, is found on his terrace. Despite lacking direct evidence tying him to the crime, Jayashankar is arrested and charged with her murder, an outcome that jolts the existing order and thrusts the investigation into the spotlight. The pursuit intensifies as the case forces the investigators to navigate loyal duties versus professional duty, testing their principles and careers in equal measure. The film blends present-day reflection with the shadows of past decisions, showing how one decision to release Manu Das triggers a chain of consequences that reverberate through the force and family lives. Throughout, Udayabhanu's TV narration frames the tension, offering a narrative lens that questions truth, accountability, and the ethical strain of portraying crime on screen.

Thalavan Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Thalavan (2024): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why was Jayashankar arrested for Ramya's murder despite lacking direct evidence?

Jayashankar was arrested because Ramya's body was discovered on his terrace, and she was the wife of a man he had previously arrested. These circumstances created strong circumstantial evidence against him, and despite the lack of direct proof connecting him to the crime, the police moved forward with charges. The arrest was also influenced by the political and public pressure surrounding the case.

Q2

Why did Karthik release Manu Das despite him being caught in an attempted murder case?

Karthik released Manu Das because he believed Manu's claim of self-defense. As a Sub-Inspector known for his upright and principled approach, Karthik felt the evidence didn't support a murder charge and that Manu was acting in self-defense. This decision directly conflicted with Jayashankar's more pragmatic policing style and created significant tension within the department.

  • manu das
  • self-defense
  • police corruption

Q3

What is the Cheppanamthotta Case that Udayabhanu covers on his show?

The Cheppanamthotta Case is the infamous case involving Circle Inspector Jayashankar and Sub-Inspector Karthik. It began with Karthik releasing Manu Das and escalated when Ramya's body was found on Jayashankar's terrace, leading to Jayashankar's arrest. The case shocked the community, attracted intense media attention, and became the subject of Udayabhanu's television program, which frames the entire narrative.

  • cheppanamthotta case

Q4

Why did Jayashankar object to Karthik's decision to release Manu Das?

Jayashankar objected because he has a more pragmatic approach to policing compared to Karthik's idealistic stance. He believed Manu Das should not have been released so readily, viewing Karthik's decision as naive and potentially dangerous. This disagreement highlighted the fundamental difference in their policing philosophies and sowed the seeds of discord between the two officers.

  • jayashankar
  • karthik conflict
  • police philosophy

Q5

What triggered Jayashankar's arrest in the murder investigation?

Jayashankar's arrest was triggered by two main factors: the discovery of Ramya's body on his terrace and her connection to a man he had previously arrested. These circumstances made him the prime suspect immediately. Even though there was no solid evidence directly linking him to the crime, the police proceeded with charges, putting his career and reputation at severe risk.

  • jayashankar arrest
  • prime suspect
  • terrace body
  • police investigation
Q6

Why does the investigation create tension between Karthik and Jayashankar?

The investigation creates intense tension because Karthik is assigned to lead the case against his own colleague Jayashankar. Their relationship was already strained due to their conflicting approaches to policing - Karthik being idealistic and Jayashankar being pragmatic. Now Karthik must investigate someone he knows professionally, while also confronting how his own earlier decision to release Manu Das may have triggered the chain of events leading to this moment.

  • karthik
  • jayashankar

Q7

What is Udayabhanu's role in the story and why does his TV show matter?

Udayabhanu is a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police who now hosts a popular television crime show. His program frames the entire narrative, providing a meta-commentary on truth and accountability. He recounts real cases from his policing days, and his decision to cover the Cheppanamthotta Case - despite his initial reluctance - becomes the lens through which viewers understand the events. Q8

  • ramya
  • jayashankar
  • victim
  • arrested man's wife

Q9

What happened after Manu Das was rearrested?

After Manu Das was rearrested, the situation became more complex. In the last act the pieces finally click into place: the real mastermind behind Ramya’s murder is Shivadasan, the retired officer whose son Arun had been brutally beaten by Jayashankar years earlier. Arun’s humiliation drove him to suicide, and Shivadasan blames Jayashankar for the tragedy. To avenge his son and to eliminate Jayashankar’s career, Shivadasan enlists the small‑time goons Sinto and Joshy, using them to kill Ramya, abduct her daughter, and stage the crime so that all evidence points at his former colleague.

While Karthik is officially tasked with the investigation, he and Jayashankar pursue a parallel trail. A voice note from their missing constable Benny – who had uncovered a passport‑office record showing that Arun never left the country – leads them to Shivadasan’s house. There they rescue Benny, discover the falsified story about Arun’s “study abroad” and unearth the hidden connection between Shivadasan, Sinto and Joshy. Confronted with the truth, Shivadasan is arrested for orchestrating Ramya’s killing and for the earlier cover‑up.

The film then cuts to the televised episode that retired DySP Udhayabanu had produced, recounting the entire case for his audience. Just as the program goes live, the camera catches the shocking headline: Udhayabanu has been found dead, a bullet to the head. His murder is left unexplained, hinting that someone still linked to the Ramya case—or perhaps a new adversary—has silenced the man who dared to expose the truth, setting the stage for a possible sequel.
