Three years prior to the events of the film, mysterious creatures known as Reapers emerged from underground sinkholes. These apex predators exterminated most of humanity, forcing the few survivors to retreat to isolated communities at high altitudes.

In the Lost Gulch Refuge of Colorado, Will lives with his son, Hunter, who suffers from a serious lung disease. Will is haunted by memories of his late wife, Tara, who was killed by Reapers during a previous expedition.

The surrounding communities have resorted to conserving power by shutting off their radios and communicating with flags. This isolation leads Hunter to grow increasingly frustrated about their situation.

Will discovers that they are running low on crucial oxygen filters for Hunter. Despite warnings from Nina, he convinces her to join him on a perilous journey to Boulder in search of replacements.

Will, Nina, and Katie enter the Elba Fire Road, which is known to lead them beyond the safety line. Nina carries a specially designed device to detect Reapers, which adds a layer of protection during their treacherous journey.

The group collects essential supplies, including a grenade launcher, as they make their way toward a former ski area. Their journey is fraught with tension as they must remain vigilant against the lurking Reapers.

After being spotted by a Reaper, Will manages to activate the ski lift's backup generators. This timely action allows the group to escape to a higher location, momentarily evading the deadly creature.

The group takes refuge in an old lodge, where Nina theorizes about the Reapers, suggesting they don't eat or sleep. This revelation implies that they may not be biological creatures, adding to the mystery of their existence.

They reach a mining tunnel familiar to Will, but the entrance to the levels above the safety line has been sealed. Deeming it necessary, they descend into the lower levels, where danger lurks.

While exploring the mines, the group is attacked by a Reaper, leading to the tragic death of Katie. This harrowing experience pushes both Nina and Will to further question their survival strategies.

Nina believes that Reapers possess magnetic defense mechanisms and suggests that magnesium-laced bullets might be the solution to defeat them. Inspired, they continue their journey, determined to find the means to kill the creatures.

The team manages to locate oxygen filters in an abandoned hospital in Boulder. However, they face another Reaper attack, necessitating a desperate escape led by Will's strategic use of explosives.

Although Will is eager to reunite with Hunter, Nina convinces him to visit her lab for her magnesium supply, which may prove pivotal in their fight against the Reapers. This visit deepens their bond as they share personal losses.

Back at her lab, Nina successfully kills a Reaper using a bullet infused with cobalt. This significant victory bolsters their hope and confirms the effectiveness of her theories about the creatures.

Will finally returns to Lost Gulch Refuge and reunites with Hunter. With newfound hope and capabilities, the community signals resilience against the Reapers by raising a pirate flag and resuming radio communication.
