The whole story of Extinction (2018) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Peter, an engineer portrayed by Michael Peña, grapples with haunting nightmares that strain both his mind and family life, as they depict intense encounters with an unknown alien adversary. As these visions escalate in intensity, they start impacting his wife, Alice Caplan, who implores him to seek professional help. At work, Peter’s episodes further disrupt his life, leading to serious workplace incidents. Concerned for his well-being, his boss, David, recommends he visit a specialized clinic.

After a particularly harrowing episode that results in him blacking out for hours, Peter reluctantly agrees to the intervention. At the clinic, he encounters Chris, a fellow patient who shares troubling visions of his own. Chris reassures Peter that he isn’t losing his mind and encourages him to trust his visions—an idea that has driven Chris to consider erasing his memories through treatment. However, motivated by Chris’ insights, Peter decides to exit the clinic without seeking further help.

Later that day, as Alice throws a celebration for her recent promotion at an architecture firm, Peter becomes increasingly consumed by the anomalies plaguing his mind. While guests mingle, he fixates on the sky, desperately searching for evidence of an alien incursion. Meanwhile, their friends and neighbors, Ray and Samantha, offer support to Alice amidst the chaos. Just as Ray attempts to interject with logic, Peter spots ominous lights in the sky. Suddenly, invading spacecraft unleash devastation on the city, impacting their apartment building.

Amidst the ensuing turmoil, Peter and Alice realize their daughter Hannah is missing. When Ray discovers his daughter Megan is also unaccounted for, the two men understand the children may have gone off together. They rush to find the girls, but upon rescuing them from an elevator, they uncover a grave situation: alien ground troops are infiltrating their building and executing people.

As the families take shelter, Peter and Alice barricade themselves while the children cower in fear. When a soldier attempts to breach the door, Peter and Alice strain to keep it shut. Distressed from the unfolding chaos, Lucy, played by Erica Tremblay, leaves her hiding spot for her precious stuffed monkey, Herman. In a moment of horror, the soldier breaks a wall, gaining access to the room.

In an intense showdown, Peter ambushes the intruder. Although he wrests control of the soldier’s weapon, a biometric lock prevents him from firing it. In a dramatic turn, Alice uses the telescope—an object meant for stargazing—to incapacitate their assailant. The family makes a daring escape to the building's rooftop and reunites with Ray, Samantha, and Megan, only to witness another horrific scene as a spaceship obliterates a group of survivors trying to signal for help.

Faced with the urgency of the situation, Peter’s group decides they must leave their apartment or risk being killed. They attempt to descend the building via a malfunctioning window-washing lift but are forced back inside just before it crashes.

With a grim realization that a solid refuge awaits in his workplace, Peter recalls that it was designed to withstand assaults. Alice and Samantha propose navigating the city’s underground tunnels to reach the factory. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes when a spaceship attacks, resulting in the deaths of Ray, Samantha, and Megan. Peter’s family escapes onto the building's exterior but are soon pinned down by alien soldiers.

Just in time, Peter bypasses the rifle’s security, enabling them to fight their way to the tunnels, although Alice sustains serious injuries. The soldier from their apartment regains consciousness and tracks them to the underground. A fierce confrontation ensues, but Peter emerges victorious, subsequently discovering that the soldier is human and fluent in English. In disbelief, Peter compels him to assist with Alice’s urgent need for medical help.

As they reach the factory, Miles, the soldier, explains the long-anticipated invasion had been predicted for decades. A medic examines Alice but cannot save her, and in a desperate plea, Miles reveals that Alice is not human but an android. Peter, faced with the dauting task of saving Alice, realizes that he must provide the power she needs—his own lifeforce.

In a moment of courage, Peter preps to sacrifice himself and in an unexpected twist, feels no pain as he pierces his chest. With help from Miles, he manages to save Alice. Upon regaining consciousness, Peter experiences visions of a future where he and Alice navigate a world intertwined with synthetic beings—creations increasingly resembling humans.

As societal tensions arise around the existence of these "synths," Peter and Alice pick up the pieces of their world while raising their daughters. They come to understand their memories had been blissfully suppressed to alleviate the burden of their past actions. While conversing with Miles, Peter learns that humanity had inhabited Mars for several generations, unearthing knowledge about synths with the intent of reclaiming Earth.

As the humans launch their invasion, the synths prepare for battle, leading to a climactic showdown in the factory. Amidst the chaos, Peter proposes a future of camaraderie between humans and synths. Their escape train departs just as the conflict intensifies, providing a brief window to glimpse the ravaged city above before descending into the safety of the underground.

Extinction Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Extinction (2018): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Peter have nightmares about aliens before the invasion?

Peter's nightmares are actually suppressed memories returning. He and Alice are synthetic beings (synths) created by humans from Mars. Their memories were erased to hide their past actions during the human-synth conflict. The nightmares stem from these buried memories of the impending invasion that his programming recognized before conscious awareness.

Foreshadowing: Peter's strange connection to Chris at the clinic hints that both share similar non-human origins.

  • peter nightmares
  • visions
  • premonition
  • alien attack
  • synth memory
Q2

Is Alice human or a synth in Extinction?

Alice is revealed to be a synth (synthetic android), not human. During the factory scene, Miles explains that Alice is an android who requires a power source, Peter's own life force, to survive after being critically injured. This twist recontextualizes their entire relationship and explains why Peter can sacrifice his lifeforce to save her.

Foreshadowing: Peter's visions and the unusual bond he feels with Alice hint at their shared non-human nature.

  • alice synth
  • alice android
  • is alice human
  • synth twist
Q3

Why is the alien soldier actually human?

The soldier Peter confronts is Miles, a human soldier from the Mars colony. The invading forces are not aliens but humans who colonized Mars decades earlier and developed synths to reclaim Earth. The synths (including Peter and Alice) were created to serve humanity but eventually rebelled, leading to the war shown in the film.

Foreshadowing: Peter's nightmare visions show human-like soldiers, not extraterrestrials.

  • miles soldier
  • human soldier
  • alien invasion
  • mars colonist
Q4

How does Peter save Alice at the end of Extinction?

Peter saves Alice by transferring his own life force to power her systems. Since both are synths, Peter can physically connect to Alice and provide the energy she needs to survive her injuries. This act of sacrifice surprises Peter because he feels no pain when piercing his chest, confirming his synthetic nature.

Foreshadowing: Miles' earlier explanation that Alice requires power points to her mechanical nature.

  • save alice
  • peter sacrifice
  • power transfer
  • synth life force
Q5

Is Peter also a synth in Extinction?

Yes, Peter is also a synth. His ability to power Alice and his lack of pain when transferring his life force confirm he is synthetic. His nightmares were suppressed memories from his original programming, and his visions of the future show synths coexisting with humans, memories of his purpose that were erased.

Foreshadowing: Peter's intense visions of alien conflicts and his instinctive knowledge of the factory's defenses.

  • peter synth
  • is peter human
  • peter android
  • synthetic being
Q6

Why were Peter and Alice's memories erased?

Peter and Alice's memories were suppressed to relieve them of the burden of their past actions during the human-synth war. As synths who fought against humanity, they had done things that would cause emotional trauma. The erasure allowed them to live peacefully as a family without that weight, though it also hid the truth about their identity and the coming invasion.

Foreshadowing: Chris's suggestion that erasing memories through treatment might help Peter reflects how synths could alter their own programming.

  • memory erasure
  • suppressed memories
  • peter alice past
  • synth programming
Q7

What are the synths in Extinction?

Synths are synthetic androids created by humans who colonized Mars. They were initially designed to help reclaim Earth from some other threat, but eventually they rebelled against their human creators. The invasion in the film is actually humans returning from Mars to retake Earth from the synths who now control the planet.

Foreshadowing: The future visions Peter sees show a world where synths and humans interact as equals.

  • synths explained
  • synthetic beings
  • mars colony
  • android creation
Q8

Does Ray die in Extinction?

Yes, Ray, Samantha, and Megan are killed during the escape through the city's underground tunnels. A spaceship attacks the group while they're navigating the tunnels, resulting in their deaths. This tragedy occurs just after Peter and Alice's family decides to head toward the factory for safety.

Foreshadowing: The tense escape sequence builds toward this loss as the group splits to navigate dangerous terrain.

  • ray death
  • megan death
  • samantha dies
  • tunnel attack
Q9

Why does Peter leave the therapy clinic?

Peter leaves the clinic after meeting Chris, another patient who shares his visions. Chris convinces Peter that his nightmares are not mental illness but genuine premonitions, real memories. This reassurance prompts Peter to trust his visions instead of undergoing treatment, leading him to leave the clinic just as the invasion begins.

Foreshadowing: Chris's own belief that his visions are real foreshadows the truth about synthetic memory.

  • peter leaves clinic
  • chris patient
  • therapy clinic
  • trust visions
Q10

Why is Peter's factory designed to withstand attacks?

Peter's workplace is a factory specifically designed to withstand assaults because it was built as a secure facility, likely by or for the synth resistance. Its defensive capabilities become crucial as the only viable shelter when the apartment becomes untenable during the invasion.

Foreshadowing: Peter's immediate knowledge that the factory offers safety reflects his synthetic programming.

  • factory shelter
  • peter workplace
  • attack proof building
  • survival location
Q11

What happens at the end of Extinction?

The ending shows Peter and Alice surviving with their daughters Hannah and Megan in a post-battle world. They board an escape train as the climactic battle between humans and synths erupts at the factory. The final scenes suggest a fragile hope for coexistence between humans and synths, though the world remains devastated and the conflict unresolved.

Foreshadowing: Peter's earlier visions of a future where synths and humans live together foreshadow this outcome.

  • ending explained
  • movie ending
  • human synth peace
  • escape train
Q12

What happens to Chris from the clinic in Extinction?

Chris is last seen at the therapy clinic considering memory erasure treatment. After Peter leaves the clinic following their conversation, the invasion begins. Chris's ultimate fate is not shown, but he presumably faces the alien attack like everyone else in the city.

Foreshadowing: Chris's decision to consider erasing his memories parallels Peter and Alice's own suppressed history.

  • chris fate
  • clinic patient
  • memory erasure treatment
