What Happens in Exit: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Exit (2020) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Once one of the best rock climbers in his college years, Yong-nam is now a grown man who is not employed and must live with his parents just to get by. His older sister Jung-hyun keeps nudging him to clean up his act and make a better impression for their mother’s upcoming 70th birthday celebration, a moment that feels bittersweet as their family dynamic strains under the pressure of time.

For the birthday, Yong-nam pushes to hold the gathering at the Cloud Garden, quietly hoping that his old crush and fellow ex-rock climber Eui-joo works there. He feigns surprise at seeing her and, trying to impress, fabricates a story about a successful career—an evasive truth that catches up with him later, when Eui-joo becomes curious about why he lied.

The celebration is interrupted when a terrorist drives a truck close to the Cloud Garden and releases a toxic white gas. Panic spreads through the city as the cloud expands, and Eui-joo learns from a close friend that Yong-nam’s job claim was a fabrication, deepening the tension between them. The family rushes back toward safety, but Jung-hyun is quickly overwhelmed by the gas, forcing everyone to reorder their escape.

With the gas advancing, the group heads to the roof, only to discover the door is locked. Yong-nam improvises by smashing a window and using a makeshift harness to scale to the adjacent building, eventually opening the door for his family. Once assembled on the roof, they manage to hail a passing rescue helicopter with crude SOS signals, but the helicopter’s weight limit prevents Yong-nam and Eui-joo from boarding.

Refusing to surrender, they wrap themselves in improvised safety gear and move to seek higher ground. After locating a suitable building, they signal another helicopter to come, and from across the way they notice a group of students trapped in a building. They choose to guide the helicopter toward the students, sacrificing their own chance at rescue for others.

A nearby gas station explodes, sending a surge of toxic gas that forces them to flee the building before they can be rescued. Realizing that conventional routes are no longer viable, Yong-nam and Eui-joo decide their only option is to reach the tower crane—the highest point in the area. A drone appears and provides directional help, leading them toward their goal.

They sprint and climb across a series of buildings until the drone runs out of power, leaving them at a dead end. Just as despair sets in, multiple drones converge toward their location, and Yong-nam uses one to suspend a rope between buildings. The plan works briefly, but their combined weight proves too much for the drone, and they fall—seemingly to their deaths—only to survive the impact and reach the tower crane itself, where they are finally rescued by a helicopter.

On solid ground again, Yong-nam reunites with his family in a tearful moment, the relief palpable as they gather. As he and Eui-joo exchange a tentative farewell and a hopeful look for the future, rain begins to fall, gradually washing away the last traces of the white gas from the city.

Exit Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Exit (2020): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Yong-nam lie to Eui-joo about his job?

Yong-nam lies about having a successful career because he wants to impress Eui-joo, whom he has feelings for. Since he's currently unemployed and living with his parents, he fabricates a story about a better life to make himself seem worthy of her. This lie stems from his insecurity about his current situation and his desire to present himself favorably to someone from his past.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, his sister Jung-hyun pressures him to clean up his act for their mother's birthday, hinting at his pattern of avoiding responsibility.

Q2

Why is the rooftop door locked during the gas attack?

The rooftop door is locked, which is common in many buildings for security and safety reasons. This forces Yong-nam to improvise by smashing a window and using his climbing skills to reach the adjacent building, opening the door for his family from the other side.

  • rooftop
  • door
  • locked
  • gas
  • escape
Q3

Why can't Yong-nam and Eui-joo board the first rescue helicopter?

The rescue helicopter has a strict weight limit, and there isn't enough capacity to take both Yong-nam and Eui-joo along with his family. This forces them to stay behind while his parents and sister are evacuated, creating a critical moment where they must find another way to survive.

  • helicopter
  • weight limit
  • rescue
  • escape
Q4

Why do Yong-nam and Eui-joo give up their rescue chance to help the students?

When Yong-nam and Eui-joo spot trapped students in another building, they choose to signal the helicopter toward the students instead of themselves. This selfless act demonstrates Yong-nam's character development from a self-absorbed liar to someone willing to sacrifice his own survival for others.

  • helicopter

Q5

Why is the tower crane the only option for escape?

The toxic gas continues to spread and rise, making ground-level escape impossible. The tower crane represents the highest point in the area, which Yong-nam believes will put them above the gas cloud. Since conventional routes are blocked and the gas is advancing, reaching the crane becomes their only viable survival option.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, they wrap themselves in improvised safety gear to head to higher ground, establishing that altitude is their only advantage.

  • gas

Q6

Why do the drones help Yong-nam and Eui-joo escape?

The drones appear to be part of the emergency response system or surveillance network deployed during the disaster. They provide directional guidance toward the tower crane, likely because the operators recognize the two survivors are attempting to reach safety at the highest point. The drones assist by leading them through the chaotic environment and even helping create a rope bridge.

Foreshadowing: When the gas station explodes, the situation becomes even more urgent, prompting more drones to converge on their location.

  • drones
  • escape
  • guidance
  • tower crane
Q7

Why does the drone-assisted rope crossing fail?

The drones are not designed to support human weight. When Yong-nam uses one drone to suspend a rope between buildings, the combined weight of both Yong-nam and Eui-joo proves too much for the drone's capability. The drone loses power and they fall, though they miraculously survive the impact.

  • fall

Q8

Why does Jung-hyun get overwhelmed by the gas so quickly?

Jung-hyun stumbles during the evacuation to the roof and falls behind, exposing her to the toxic white gas for longer than the others. The gas spreads rapidly and is extremely dangerous, so even a brief exposure is enough to incapacitate her. This forces the family to leave her behind temporarily, creating emotional tension.

Q9

Why does rain start falling at the end of the movie?

Rain begins to fall as Yong-nam and Eui-joo are reunited with his family after their rescue. The rain gradually washes away the toxic white gas from the city, symbolizing the end of the disaster and the beginning of renewal. This natural phenomenon provides a hopeful, cleansing conclusion to the crisis.

Foreshadowing: The entire film takes place under clear conditions, making the sudden rain a deliberate narrative choice for the ending.

Q10

Why does Yong-nam's climbing background save the family?

Yong-nam was once one of the best rock climbers in college, and those skills prove crucial during the disaster. When the rooftop door is locked, he smashes a window and uses a makeshift harness to scale to the adjacent building. His agility and experience with heights allow him to navigate the dangerous urban terrain throughout their escape, ultimately leading them to the tower crane.

Foreshadowing: His sister pressures him to 'clean up his act,' suggesting his past achievements contrast with his current stagnation.

Q11

Why does the gas station explode during their escape?

The gas station near the terrorist truck explodes, likely triggered by the fire from the initial attack or electrical malfunction in the chaos. This explosion sends a new wave of toxic gas rushing toward Yong-nam and Eui-joo, forcing them to flee their building before they can be rescued and pushing them toward the tower crane as their only remaining option.
