The film unfolds in a non-linear fashion, revealing a series of interconnected stories that delve into dark themes and supernatural occurrences. The narrative begins in 2004, Tokyo, where Fiona Landers, a live-in nurse, abruptly leaves her place of employment, shaken by traumatic events she witnessed in the house. Once outside, she encounters the haunting spirits of Kayako Saeki and her son Toshio, which foreshadows the chilling occurrences that will follow.

Fiona subsequently returns to her home in Cross Creek, reuniting with her husband Sam and their daughter Melinda. Initially, their reunion seems warm and joyful, with her family warmly embracing her return. However, the tranquility is short-lived, leading to a tragic turn of events as Fiona ultimately kills her daughter Melinda and then Sam, before taking her own life. This shocking sequence of violence raises numerous questions and sets off a complex investigation led by Detectives Goodman and Wilson. While Wilson investigates the crime scene within the house, Goodman finds himself unable to muster the courage to enter, a decision that haunts him later as Wilson’s experiences grow increasingly disturbing—ultimately culminating in an encounter with Fiona’s vengeful spirit.

As time passes, the focus shifts to a couple, Peter and Nina Spencer, who are preparing to welcome a new child into their lives. When a doctor reveals that their unborn baby may suffer from a severe condition known as Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), the couple is understandably distressed. The Spencers, both real estate agents, find themselves drawn to the old Landers residence. During this time, Peter encounters the ghost of Melinda, whom he mistakenly perceives as a lost child. He takes it upon himself to care for her in the days leading up to a tragic discovery where the horrors of the past resurface, leading to devastating consequences that result in the loss of Nina and their baby, as Peter succumbs to supernatural forces.

A year later, the house is again home to an older couple, Faith and William Matheson. Faith begins experiencing disturbing visions and connections with Melinda’s spirit. Concerned for Faith’s mental state, William seeks help from psychologist Lorna Moody. However, as Faith’s mental condition further deteriorates and she kills William in a frenzied state, Lorna’s life is put at risk when she encounters the gruesome aftermath, leading to her own perilous fate in the haunted landscape.

Months pass, bringing us to Detective Muldoon and her son Burke, who move to Cross Creek following her husband’s death. Muldoon partners with Goodman to investigate the ominous circumstances surrounding Lorna’s demise, leading her to uncover the deeply entwined history of the Landers family and their tragic fate. As she delves deeper, Muldoon realizes that she, too, is ensnared in the sinister curse associated with the house. Wilson, who is now in a psych ward, warns her that the curse has targeted her, and her investigative journey only reveals more horrifying truths.

Determined to confront the malevolent spirits, Muldoon finds herself grappling with visions of the past, including Sam’s ghost appearing on her surveillance footage. She learns the origins of the curse, tied to Fiona’s experience with the tragic events in Tokyo, revealing that the murderous rage that fueled their deaths has transcended time and space.

In a desperate attempt to end the cycle of horror, Muldoon confronts the darkest parts of her reality. She decides to take action against the curse, heading to the old Landers house and preparing to set it ablaze in the hope of destroying the malevolent force. However, the haunting presence of Melinda’s ghost seeks to manipulate her emotions, leading to a heart-stopping moment where reality blurs between love and tragedy as Muldoon struggles to save her son from the clutches of a terrible fate. Despite her efforts, the film closes with an eerie twist, as Muldoon finds herself cornered by the horrors she sought to escape, marking a grim end to her harrowing journey through a haunted legacy.
