When siblings Peter Garrett (Chris O’Donnell) and his sister Annie (portrayed by Robin Tunney) embark on a challenging climb in the iconic Monument Valley, tragedy strikes during an accident that forces Peter to make the gut-wrenching decision to cut the rope, resulting in their father Royce’s untimely death. Haunted by this harrowing experience, Peter has since abandoned climbing to pursue a career in photography. In stark contrast, Annie has established herself as a prominent mountain climber.

As fate would have it, Peter finds himself at the base camp of K2 in Pakistan, the second highest mountain in the world, where Annie is determined to tackle this perilous challenge. The expedition, spearheaded by wealthy industrialist Elliot Vaughn (Bill Paxton), aims to conquer the mountain’s treacherous conditions with the assistance of his friend Tom McLaren (Nicholas Lea). The night before their ascent, a lavish party unfolds, during which Vaughn approaches Peter, encouraging him to join their ambitious climb, only to be met with a swift refusal.

The climb soon descends into chaos as fierce winds wreak havoc. Trapped in a deadly crevasse, Annie, Vaughn, and Tom are left in dire straits. Using Morse code, Annie sends out a desperate message for help, prompting Peter to mobilize a rescue mission. However, the rescue team soon realizes they may need explosives to reach the stranded climbers, but the only available option is a supply of compromised nitroglycerin. Rallying the base’s finest climbers—including brothers Cyril and Malcolm (Le Marquand and Mendelsohn), Monique Aubertine (Izabella Scorupco), Kareem Nazir (Alexander Siddig), and Skip Taylor (Robert Taylor)—Peter embarks on the treacherous mission to save his sister.

Alongside his team, Peter seeks the expertise of Montgomery Wick (Scott Glenn), renowned as the world’s leading climber and K2 expert. The rescue teams split into pairs, each tasked with navigating different routes up the mountain, while grappling with the volatile nature of the nitroglycerin. As trepidation mounts, Cyril’s flirtations with Monique lead to disastrous consequences, culminating in an avalanche that tragically claims Cyril’s life.

In the depths of the mountain, time is running out for Annie and the others. As they contend with severe injuries and dwindling resources, Vaughn’s self-preservation tactics reveal a darker side, exacerbating the tensions among the climbers. Meanwhile, Wick uncovers a painful truth about Vaughn’s past, igniting a desire for revenge that threatens to unravel the mission.

As Peter and Monique forge a deeper bond amidst the chaos, they strive to rescue Annie and the others using the unstable nitroglycerin they have carefully managed to transport. However, a nail-biting moment leads to the tragic loss of more climbers when the nitro ignites, leaving Peter and Monique to fend for themselves against an unforgiving mountain.

Ultimately, Bridget’s showdown with Vaughn culminates in an unexpected twist that changes the course of their fates entirely.
