Rangers Gabriel “Gabe” Walker (Sylvester Stallone) and Jessie Deighan (Janine Turner) embark on a perilous mission to save their friend Hal Tucker (Michael Rooker) and his girlfriend, Sarah (Michelle Joyner). After Hal suffers a knee injury while climbing, they find themselves stranded at a peak in the stunning Colorado Rockies. The rescue takes a tragic turn when part of Sarah’s harness breaks, leading to a horrific fall that leaves Gabe deeply traumatized and consumed by guilt for Sarah’s death, which Hal harshly blames on him.
Fast forward eight months, and Gabe returns to the ranger station to collect his belongings and persuade Jessie to leave with him. They receive an urgent call regarding stranded climbers, prompting Hal to take action, but he remains resentful and confrontational towards Gabe. As they attempt to locate the climbers, they uncover a shocking twist—the distress call was a ruse set by a group of menacing international thieves, led by the deranged former Military Intelligence officer, Eric Qualen (John Lithgow), along with his brutal crew including the ruthless Kynette (Leon Robinson), sadistic Delmar (Craig Fairbrass), and pilot Kristel (Caroline Goodall).
Qualen’s twisted plan revolves around stealing three suitcases containing over $100 million in freshly printed bills, which have been lost after a catastrophic plane crash leaves them scattered across the treacherous mountain range. In a chilling series of events and under the threat of violence, Gabe and Hal must navigate dangerous confrontations while locating the missing cases with the assistance of beacon locators.
Gabe finds himself embroiled in a fight for survival on the steep rock faces of the Rockies, forced to climb perilously high to secure the first case. With Qualen’s men hot on their trail, fraught tension mounts, leading to an avalanche that kills one of their own. In a race against time and the elements, Gabe and Jessie use old mountaineering equipment to outsmart their adversaries, even as nighttime descends and both groups seek refuge from the bitter cold.
“Want to trade?” becomes a symbol of Gabe and Jessie’s defiance as they cunningly empty one of the cases, leaving only a single bill to taunt Qualen’s gang. The peril escalates as Hal reunites with friends, only to face more tragedy when he witnesses the brutal attacks of Qualen’s mercenaries.
As the stakes rise, Hal and Gabe make harrowing choices to outmaneuver the gang, leading to explosive confrontations that test their limits and push them to the brink. They face traps, betrayals, and the ever-looming threat of death, as they try to save Jessie from the clutches of Qualen, who uses her as leverage.
In a dramatic showdown, not only do Gabe and Hal have to battle Qualen and his henchmen, but they must also confront their own inner demons and reconcile with the past tragedy as they cling to their lives—and each other. This thrilling adventure culminates atop a cliffside bridge with a heart-stopping confrontation that will determine their fates, resulting in a final, fierce fight for survival against overwhelming odds. Eventually, with rescue in sight, they find solace atop the mountain, reminiscent of happier times, as they huddle together once more.
