Hector Bloom is a laconic, driven college basketball star who juggles a demanding schedule of practice, media expectations, and the swirling chaos of campus life. He navigates the tension between his burgeoning pro career and the volatile, messy reality of his circle: a rebellious roommate, a high-stakes season, and a complicated affair with Olive, the wife of Richard, a professor and Hector’s friend. The people who orbit him are not simple obstacles but mirrors that reveal his flaws and his potential, and his coach, Coach Bullion, keeps a steady if uneasy eye on his talent, trying to channel it toward discipline and success, even as he frets over his athlete’s ability to focus when the world seems to tilt around him.

Why not?

The other central figure is Gabriel, Hector’s volatile roommate, a vulgar, borderline psychotic force who is almost a counterpoint to Hector’s cool exterior. Gabriel is consumed by rebellion: he uses drugs, disrupts a game with a guerrilla-theatre stunt, and unravels during an induction physical, turning his apartment into a scene of disorder. He embodies a raw, uncompromising impulse that clashed with the campus culture and the rules everyone pretends to follow.

Amid the upheaval, Olive reveals she is pregnant and implies Hector’s involvement might not be the child’s father, signaling an end to their affair. Olive’s declaration—paired with her insistence on her own independence—stuns Hector and pushes the triangle toward a painful impasse: Olive tells him she won’t be pulled into a new arrangement, and Richard makes it clear that he’ll not tolerate threats to his family.

That night, Hector’s team wins a decisive game in a moment of electric triumph; the crowd storms the court, lifting him to celebrate as a symbol of the team’s grit. But the celebration sits beside chaos: Gabriel breaches Olive’s home during her bath, assaulting her, a clash that ends with Olive fleeing outdoors as Gabriel gives chase, right as Hector arrives. Gabriel, knowing of Olive’s affairs with Hector, screams that Olive prefers him to Richard, only to vanish when Richard returns. Richard confronts Hector about Olive, and Olive, clinging to her autonomy, states she won’t go with anyone—ever. Richard warns Hector he’ll kill him before escorting Olive back inside, leaving the campus tense with unresolved loyalties and fear.

The following morning, Gabriel, now stark naked, storms a biology lab and releases a chorus of vermin—snakes, iguanas, mice, and more—until campus authorities intervene. They place him in a straitjacket and load him into a padded van, while Hector watches, torn between anger, concern, and a stubborn sense of responsibility. He seizes the moment, jumping onto the back of the van and demanding they open it, only to leap off as the vehicle pulls away, shouting a final, personal note to Gabriel that his mother called.

In the end, the story threads together ambition, rebellion, and the perilous lines people cross when desire, loyalty, and expectation collide. The film offers a textured portrait of college life where a star athlete’s discipline and a roommate’s destabilizing fervor pull at the same taut thread, testing the limits of friendship, love, and self-control.
