A group of friends in their mid-twenties reunite for their annual trip to a cottage in the woods. Alycia, Robin, Freddy, and Matthew arrive first, stunned when Dan arrives with his 19-year-old girlfriend Marley. Two years ago, Dan proposed to Robin, but she turned him down, leaving their relationship tense and fragile. Last to arrive are Julia and her fiancé Darren, and Alycia immediately feels a sting of jealousy at Julia’s happiness, treating her with chilly coldness as the weekend begins.
The eight settle in and begin making dinner, a scene that quickly exposes the undercurrents among them. Robin tries to bridge a connection with Marley, only to learn that Marley and Dan have been dating for merely two weeks, a revelation that stirs discomfort in the room. After the meal, the group relaxes into drinks and mushrooms, a quiet indulgence that amplifies the weekend’s tensions. Matthew demonstrates his musical talent with an original song, but Dan’s pushy insistence that he pursue a music career is met with a withdrawn shrug from Matthew, signaling that dreams and realities are not aligned for everyone. When Marley falls asleep, Dan and Robin share a brief kiss in the kitchen, a moment that Robin ends with a sudden, angry exit. Alycia and Freddy, meanwhile, take to a campfire and end up intimate, a moment that foreshadows the blurred lines between friendship and desire.
The next morning brings confessions and new questions. Robin tells Alycia and Julia about the kiss, and opinions diverge: Alycia suspects Dan engineered Marley’s presence to poke at Robin, while Julia wonders if Dan is simply grappling with lingering feelings for her. Darren, catching a conversation about Julia’s past, is surprised to learn she once operated as a drug dealer in high school, a revelation that clashes with the “good girl” image she now carries. The group decides to spend a day at a nearby lake, where conversations grow louder and secrets threaten to spill.
Freddy confesses to the group that he slept with Alycia, but when he asks her out again, she rebuffs with a cold insistence and then retreats. The other women encourage Alycia to give Freddy a real chance, while Julia opens up about the fear of committing to one person for life. Robin and Alycia discuss the fear of stability, adding a fragile layer of vulnerability to the weekend. Meanwhile, Dan mocks Matthew for quitting his job to join the trip, a taunt that fuels Matthew’s growing unhappiness. Marley confides in Matthew that she thinks Dan is preachy and looks down on others, a sentiment that sharpens the tension between Dan and the entire group.
The social dynamic splinters into a confrontation when Marley and Dan drift apart, and a heated moment ends with Marley pulling away and declaring a break from the escalating drama. Daniel’s attempts at control collide with Marley’s insistence on autonomy, and the two drift toward an awkwardly intimate moment that ends with Marley walking away, making it clear she won’t be used as a pawn in anyone’s game. Darren loosens up, drinking with the others, while Julia questions the idea of turning thirty and what it means to have one’s life “all together.” Alycia, entangled in gossip about Marley and Matthew flirting, mutters a cruel comparison of Marley to Julia, a remark that exposes the depth of her insecurity. The revelation that Julia has had sexual history with several friends in the group causes discomfort, and Alycia’s crude comment about Julia giving everyone STDs backfires, prompting Julia to confront her about the cruelty she has faced all weekend. The air grows heavy as the group processes these revelations, and the atmosphere returns to a thick, uneasy silence.
Matthew finds a quiet moment with Marley, and their conversation leads to a kiss, a small but meaningful moment that signals a potential shift in his own maturation. Darren assures Julia that her past does not define him and that he wants the real Julia to be her self, not a version shaped by fear or pretense. They reconcile, and a sense of fragile harmony returns to their couple.
Dinner time later brings more awkwardness: Julia, Darren, Alycia, Freddy, Dan, and Robin sit in a heavy, tense stillness, while Matthew and Marley are conspicuously absent. The missing pair’s absence looms over the cabin as the group tries to maintain normalcy, with Julia worried but others urging her not to jump to conclusions. In a moment of honesty, Alycia breaks down and admits she’s envious of Julia’s seemingly flourishing life, revealing the root of her insecurity. Robin consoles her, offering a reminder to stop comparing herself to others and to pursue what she genuinely wants, a conversation that nudges Alycia toward a more hopeful path. This moment catalyzes a shift: Alycia apologizes to Julia and Darren, and then to Freddy, asking for another chance with him.
As the night deepens, Freddy finds Dan and Robin drinking together outside, and the three share a long stretch of companionship before heading back to the cabin. But when they return, the rest of the group—Julia, Darren, and Alycia—has vanished, leaving their bags and cars untouched as a chilling sign that something is terribly wrong. Fear grips Robin as she realizes that neither Marley nor Matthew has resurfaced since the lake visit, and Freddy sets off to check the guest cabin where the couple had been staying, promising a five-minute return that never comes. The cabin grows quiet as the two adults are left alone, the fear mounting with every passing minute.
A heated argument between Robin and Dan escalates into a raw examination of their failed relationship. Robin admits that she still loves him, and Dan recalls the moments when, despite their problems, she remained the person he wanted to be with. The emotional exchange rekindles something between them, and they decide to leave the cabin to search for their missing friends, even though fear shadows their steps. They step into the night, the cabin door closing softly behind them as Robin asks the question that lingers in the air: “Now what?”
