Police detective and part-time novelist Scott Glenn as Gene Ralston wakes from a nightmare that pits him against another man at a sun-scorched sand quarry, a fall into the pit, and a suffocation that feels all too real. When morning comes, a new neighbor has moved in across the street, and the encounter that follows unsettles him in more ways than one.

Introducing herself to him, Lara Flynn Boyle as Tory Bass / Sabrina James exudes a jittery, anxious energy and insists that she’s haunted by the sense that someone has been murdered. Gene, who reveals he is a policeman, learns that Tory was once involved with a man who is also a cop, deepening the web of connections surrounding the strange across-the-street woman.

That evening, Gene hosts his partner Anthony LaPaglia as Larry Talbert and Larry’s wife Sheree J. Wilson as Emily Talbert for dinner. The conversation touches on Gene’s budding career as a writer, yet his attention keeps drifting toward Tory, who seems to hold a magnetic, dangerous lure for him as the night unfolds.

The next day, Gene visits Tory and there is an immediate, electric connection as she unburdens herself, and they share a passionate encounter on her living room floor. Later, a delivery man brings Gene roses from Tory with a note inviting him to come over after dark, a hint of romance that is quickly shadowed by tragedy: Tory is found murdered when he arrives. Larry takes charge of the murder investigation and orders Gene off the case because of his involvement with the victim.

Undeterred, Gene pursues the truth, discovering that the dead woman’s hand does not bear the distinctive cut he expects. The case grows more tangled as Emily makes a move to seduce him, adding to the personal conflicts swirling around Gene and his partner’s family. In the squad room, Larry seems oblivious to the murder’s details, while Gene returns to Tory’s house only to find another woman living there, suggesting that Tory may not have existed in the way he remembered.

Seeking clarity, Gene consults the Police Department psychiatrist, David Ogden Stiers as Dr. Bert James, who admits he does not fully understand what Gene is experiencing. As Gene continues to write, he pieces together the fractures of memory, misremembered items, and the surreal elements that have filtered through while he’s been involved in the case.

A startling twist emerges: the investigation reveals that Tory’s history includes a prior homicide under a different name, information that Larry seems to know but Gene hadn’t fully grasped. The mystery intensifies as Gene follows this thread to a hospital, only to wake from a coma that has stretched for thirteen months since he was buried in the sand pit and deprived of oxygen.

What unfolds is a revelation about the nature of memory and reality. The events Gene has lived through may be the mind’s attempt to weave a coherent story out of real memories—like the sand pit and the grave danger—mixed with dreamlike elements and what he learned from Dr. James, who is, in reality, his attending neurologist. As he regains consciousness, Tory’s presence returns, and the truth behind her involvement in the case becomes clearer than before.

With his mind finally catching up to the truth, Gene uses the recovered clues to unravel the case once and for all, rearranging fragments of memory and fiction to crack the mystery that began with a nightmare and ended in the waking reconstruction of a crime. In the end, the case that began across a quiet street reveals the deeper connections between memory, dream, and justice.
