In 1905 a sprawling, shadow‑filled house on the outskirts of Los Angeles becomes the solitary world of a twelve‑year‑old girl named Sophia. Her only companions are four handcrafted dolls—each a tiny soldier, a porcelain child, a samurai, and an African warrior—imbued with the imagination and longing of a child who knows only silence and the watchful eyes of her father.
