Annie Chan Celia Sze Lim-Tse and three friends test their courage by playing a game called “contacting ghosts.” The mood shifts from playful to uneasy as Ming [Gabriel Harrison], Annie’s boyfriend who isn’t taking part in the game, spots a ghost and firmly orders everyone to stop. The night’s bravado wanes when the trio begins to suffer under mysterious, chilling circumstances, and the group’s eerie game leaves a heavier, more troubling footprint than anyone anticipated.
Ming’s sister Cissy [Gigi Lai Chi] grows increasingly worried about Ming’s safety and seeks help from her friend Fa-mo, a drama teacher, hoping someone can explain the strange, deadly turn of events. Meanwhile, Annie is seized by a hostile presence; the ghost warns Ming that Annie has only three days to live, a foreboding countdown that everyone will have to confront.
To uncover the truth, Ming teams with Fa-mo and travels to an abandoned village. There, they meet Lee Keung, an elderly local who grew up in the area and who unfolds a dark history. He recounts the tale of Cho Yan-may [Chow Yan-Yan], the Cantonese opera singer who was unjustly framed for adultery and killed by the villagers. In the days after her death, Cho’s vengeful ghost is believed to have claimed the lives of 66 villagers in eerie, unnatural ways.
As the investigation deepens, they witness Cho’s presence near a freshwater pool, its waters seemingly tainted by her spirit. The researchers theorize that Cho’s ghost can “pollute” the pool, spreading a malevolent aura through the water that causes drinkers to experience vivid hallucinations and drive them to suicide. The danger becomes personal when they intervene to stop Cissy’s fiancé, Jack [Edward Mok] from pressuring Cissy to drink the polluted water.
Ming takes a desperate step and dives into the pool to locate Cho’s remains, only to be pulled through a supernatural portal and found dead, his body surfacing to the surface. Fa-mo races back to Jack’s home with a grim resolve and drinks the polluted water so he can glimpse Cho’s ghost and confront the entity at the heart of the haunting. In a tense moment, he clutches Cissy—whom he has a crush on—and she seems to transform into Cho. He quickly realizes the transformation is an illusion, and he holds her tighter, hoping to protect them both. Yet Cho’s ghost, seemingly moved by a misperceived love, spares them and vanishes, leaving the others to grapple with what they’ve witnessed.
When Jack regains consciousness, he is unsettled by the sight of Fa-mo embracing his fiancée. The haunting presence doesn’t end there; Cho’s ghost suddenly appears beside him, and he screams, forced to confront the deeper, unresolved tragedy that ties together the living and the dead in this village of memories, guilt, and unsettled revenge.
