In post-apocalyptic Chicago, society is divided into five factions based on distinct virtues: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. This division shapes the lives and identities of all citizens, guiding their values and behaviors as they grow up.

As teenagers turn sixteen, they undergo an aptitude test to determine their suitability for one of the factions. The results are crucial, leading to a high-stakes choice that could change their lives forever.

Beatrice Prior feels disconnected from her Abnegation roots, believing she lacks selflessness. When her aptitude test reveals her as Divergent, she realizes that her uniqueness poses a significant danger in her compartmentalized society.

On Choosing Day, Beatrice makes the pivotal decision to join Dauntless, while her brother Caleb chooses Erudite. This moment marks the beginning of her journey towards finding belonging while leaving her family behind.

Enrolling in Dauntless introduces Beatrice, now known as Tris, to a rigorous initiation program led by instructor Four. Only the top twenty-one initiates will secure their place, putting immense pressure on her to succeed.

While navigating the initiation, Tris befriends initiates Christina, Al, and Will, but also faces off against rivals like Peter and Drew. Building a support network becomes essential as they face physical and mental challenges.

During a parent visiting day, Tris learns more about her mother's past in Dauntless and the implications of her Divergent status. This deepens her understanding of her family's legacy and the risks involved in choosing her new faction.

In the chaos of the Erudite coup against Abnegation, Tris and Tobias find themselves captured while confronting Jeanine, the Erudite leader. Their struggle to escape leads to heartbreaking losses and forces them into difficult decisions.
