In a post-apocalyptic Chicago, society has divided itself into five distinct factions, each formed around different virtues: Abnegation, the selfless, devoted to humanitarian work; Amity, the peaceful, nurturing farmers; Candor, the honest, who pursue truth and justice; Dauntless, the brave soldiers and protectors; and Erudite, the intelligent, keen on knowledge and science. Every year, when teenagers reach the age of sixteen, they undergo an aptitude test to determine their ideal faction. Based on the results, they face a critical choice: remain with their family’s faction or defect to another. However, those who are unable or unwilling to complete the initiation process become “Factionless,” relegated to live in dire poverty on the streets of the city.
Sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) feels a profound sense of disconnect from her Abnegation roots, struggling with her perceived lack of inherent selflessness. When her aptitude test yields mixed results, hinting at suitability for Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless, she receives a chilling warning that her uniqueness makes her Divergent—a classification considered dangerous in this highly compartmentalized society. As Choosing Day approaches, Beatrice is torn between her commitment to her family, particularly her mother Natalie Prior (Ashley Judd), and her tremendous longing for a sense of belonging elsewhere.
Rumors fomented by members of the Erudite faction insinuate that Abnegation is holding supplies and that their leader, Marcus, abused his son, consequently pushing him towards Dauntless. In a pivotal moment on Choosing Day, Beatrice opts to join Dauntless, while her brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort) aligns with Erudite. Their new instructor, Four (Theo James), reveals the rigorous initiation process, noting that only the top twenty-one initiates will secure their place in Dauntless, a shocking departure from other factions’ policies.
Adopting the name Tris, she navigates her initiation alongside new friends like Christina, Al, and Will, while clashing with adversaries including Peter, Drew, and Molly. As Tris tackles the challenges presented in initiation, including mastering weapons and engaging in combat, she impressively ranks among the top despite being physically outmatched. Tensions unexpectedly escalate when Peter maliciously attacks another initiate, Edward, resulting in dire consequences.
During the parent visiting day, revelations about Tris’s mother emerge—she was once part of Dauntless and understands the implications of Tris being Divergent. The nefarious Erudite faction continues to undermine Abnegation, launching personal attacks against Tris’s family as both children transition to new factions. Throughout her journey, Tris builds connections with several Dauntless-born initiates, including Uriah, Lynn, and Marlene, solidifying her support network.
The initiation unfolds across three main stages, the second of which exposes initiates to fear-inducing simulations—a test Tris navigates uniquely due to her Divergence. When Four recognizes her abilities, he becomes her mentor, sharing his own vulnerabilities along the way. The two confront numerous threats, including an assault on Tris that culminates in tragic decisions and lingering trauma.
As the final initiation stage approaches, Tris successfully conquers a series of fears within her simulated landscape while uncovering the dark intentions of Erudite to manipulate the Dauntless into executing an assault on Abnegation. Just as Tris finds herself emotionally vulnerable to Four, whose real name is Tobias, a catastrophic betrayal unfolds, targeting the Abnegation leadership.
During the chaos of the Erudite’s coup, Tris is unfortunately captured alongside Tobias, leading to heart-wrenching losses and challenging confrontations with Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the Erudite leader. In their escape, they reveal unexpected family ties and even death, propelling Tris into a spiral of confrontations and sacrifices. Ultimately, Tris and Tobias must band together against the Erudite’s control, culminating in a showdown within the Dauntless headquarters to reclaim their agency and secure the future of their world amid descending chaos.
The thrilling events set in motion lead the duo toward Amity, determined to find the remaining survivors of Abnegation and spark resistance against ongoing oppression, setting the stage for the riveting sequel, Insurgent.
