American-born East German dissident Alex Holbeck, living in Paris, runs a clandestine samizdat radio program aimed at audiences behind the Iron Curtain. When Bodley, a seasoned CIA operative, spots his courage and resourcefulness, he recruits Alex for a perilous mission that could tilt the balance of information during the Cold War. This assignment pushes Alex into a high-stakes game that blends espionage, ideology, and personal risk.
The plan centers on Berlin and a supposed Enigma code scrambler. The CIA, already in possession of its own device, wants to stage a deception: by having Alex steal a scrambler in Berlin, they aim to fool the Soviets into believing the Americans lack a copy. The mission is framed as a decisive move to counter a looming threat, but it is clouded by misdirection and the murky ethics of covert operations.
On arrival in East Berlin, Alex immediately finds that both the East German police and the KGB are chasing him, hardened by years of surveillance and suspicion. He must rely on a toolbox of disguises, quick passes, and careful dodges to slip through checkpoints and avoid capture, each narrow escape ratcheting up the tension as the net tightens around him.
Seeking shelter with his former lover, Karen Reinhardt, he improvises a fragile return to safety, knowing that staying put would endanger her already precarious life. Karen’s proximity becomes a double-edged sword: her courage is matched by the danger it invites, and soon she and several of Alex’s old friends are arrested and subjected to torture as interrogators try to extract his whereabouts.
As the pressure mounts, Alex leans on Karen once more; she agrees to a dangerous ruse, seducing Dimitri Vasilikov, the KGB man in charge of the hunt, to pull information from him. The hunt grows more personal as Dimitri closes in, torn between professional duty and a growing, if troubled, affection for Karen.
In a tense confrontation, Dimitri finally captures Alex and Karen and uncovers the scrambler hidden inside an exhibit artifact. Because of his feelings for Karen, he spares their lives, but he also seizes the scrambler, a move that complicates the truth of the mission. The device turns out not to be essential after all, but its disappearance has already altered the course of events. Christmas Day arrives with the thwarting of the planned assassination, and the fragile抵 of trust amidst espionage leaves a quiet, unresolved aftermath.
