Mitika, the Gypsy Contact, becomes the spark that pulls two strangers into a dangerous game when World War I erupts and a young woman cannot buy a ticket from Luxembourg to Austria. In a twist that complicates every choice, Rudy’s path crosses again with Karen Schöntag, a nurse who re-enters his life through Major Lieber’s introduction. The two men share a history with Karen, and night after night Rudy finds himself drawn to her. Their growing bond gives way to something deeper, even as Karen is revealed to be K-14—an undercover agent whose true allegiance is hidden beneath a calm, composed exterior. Karen narrowly evades capture when she slips through Rudy’s fingers, yet a routine hospital visit becomes a trap. The moment Rudy discovers the suspicious torn page from a book—one that hides an invisible message—he begins to suspect a larger plot, but he refuses to believe Karen could be a spy. Major Lieber, however, quickly sees the anomaly in her belongings that hints at deception.

The tension tightens into a calculated trap. Rudy orders a test of the Russian spy network by sending Private Muller, a Russian-speaking soldier, to K-14’s hospital posing as a prisoner of war. Muller delivers a coded signal—the two circles—and passes along a directive for K-14 to rendezvous with an agent at a deserted house that very night. Although K-14 remains cautious, the weight of the message draws her into a dangerous encounter. When she reveals enough under pressure to incriminate herself to the supposed Russian contact, Rudy is forced to intervene and arrest her. The situation grows messier when K-14’s associate shoots Rudy and knocks out Lehan, forcing him to drag the wounded woman away as he pleads for her to run.

The war eventually ends, but the story doesn’t. In a quiet, almost fated moment at a Swiss train station, a chance meeting rekindles the past and changes the odds. This time, Rudy refuses to let go of the truth—or let her slip away again. In a final sense of resolve, he holds onto the hope that love and loyalty can outlast the deception and the perils that once pulled them apart.
