The film narrates the gripping tale of an American diamond merchant, Lucas Hill, who journeys to Russia with the intention of selling rare blue diamonds that come with questionable origins. Almost immediately upon arrival, Lucas finds himself in a precarious situation as the deal begins to fall apart. His contact, Pyotr, is supposed to provide him with a sample of the blue diamonds but abandons Lucas just moments before the crucial transaction is set to take place.

Caught in a web of chaos, the buyer Boris Volkov is furious. He is accompanied by his associate Pavel. To salvage the situation and save his own reputation, Lucas pledges to deliver the entire shipment—valued at an astounding $50 million—within two days, promising a 2% commission to Boris. This urgent mission takes him to Mirny, where he intends to track down Pyotr.

Amidst this turbulent backdrop, Lucas finds himself entangled in a dangerous game. He receives a tempting offer from a rival, Vincent, who proposes a higher commission to acquire the diamonds instead. Simultaneously, Lucas develops a passionate and obsessive relationship with Katya, a local café owner in the small Siberian town of Mirny. Unfortunately, Katya’s life is far from easy; her bar’s patron, Yefrem, exhibits mild abuse toward her, and her elder brother Ivan wishes for her to marry a local boy named Anton.

In his quest for Pyotr, Lucas encounters a local informant who reveals that Pyotr has gone into hiding after selling fake diamonds to a mafia boss, who is now on the hunt for him. Despite the adverse weather conditions that hinder his flight, Lucas remains determined to find Pyotr. It becomes clear that Lucas’s commitment to his wife back home is notably weak, and while everyone in Mirny tries to protect Katya from Lucas, she is drawn to him.

The relationship intensifies, culminating in an intimate night where Lucas gives Katya a candle before departing Mirny. However, upon arriving in St. Petersburg, Lucas searches Pyotr’s usual stay and discovers the real sample diamond hidden inside a candle identical to the one he had gifted to Katya. Desperate for answers, he asks her to come to St. Petersburg with the candle, only to find that the diamond hidden within is a counterfeit.

In a tense turn of events, Lucas seeks an extension from Boris, but the meeting takes a dark turn when Boris demands a humiliating act from Katya as retribution for the delay. When Lucas and Katya return to their hotel, they are confronted by the FSB, who accuse Lucas of being in possession of counterfeit diamonds. The agents expect him to help in a dangerous scheme to sell the fake diamonds to Boris as authentic blue diamonds, fully aware that this choice risks their lives.

In a desperate attempt to conclude his dealings, Lucas provides Boris with the diamonds, assuring him of their authenticity. As the money is transferred, the FSB escorts him to the airport for his return flight. Yet, driven by his feelings for Katya, he decides to go back to Mirny. There, he receives a cryptic message indicating that Pyotr is hiding nearby, but upon searching the land, Lucas finds Pyotr dead.

With Ivan urging Lucas to leave Russia quickly, he remains torn, not wanting to expose Katya to his dangerous entanglement with Boris. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Ivan supplies Lucas with firearms. However, the next morning leads to a deadly confrontation when Pavel and his crew assault the cabin where Lucas is hiding. He fights bravely, but ultimately, tragedy strikes, and Pavel ends up murdering him.
