Death Note: The Last Name

Rem, a Shinigami, delivers a Death Note to Misa Amane. This gift marks the start of her involvement with the Kira case and the Death Note's power. Misa begins to understand the drastic potential she now wields.

Following Shiori's funeral, Light Yagami is recruited into the Kira investigation. His inclusion shifts the dynamics of the case and brings him closer to the actions surrounding Kira. He becomes a central figure in the hunt for the mysterious killer.

Misa publicly takes on the identity of the Second Kira and uses her influence to force a TV station to broadcast her taped messages. Her declaration magnifies Kira's reach and draws police attention. The public exposure marks a turning point in the investigation.

Using her Shinigami Eyes, Misa looks through the TV broadcast and targets a Kira critic, then kills Detective Mogi and two policemen who oppose her. The murders take place in public view and demonstrate the Death Note's chilling reach. The incident escalates the sense of danger surrounding the case.

Sayu is almost killed during a Kira rally. Soichiro crashes into the festival wearing a motorcycle helmet, shielding Sayu and preventing Misa from seeing his face. The dramatic moment disrupts Misa's ability to identify allies.

Light arrives to comfort Sayu and Soichiro after the incident, but Misa correctly identifies Light as Kira. The recognition confirms Light's secret identity to at least one person and complicates his effort to remain undetected. This revelation reconfigures the threat level around Light.

Light accepts Misa's help and arranges a meeting between Misa and L to learn L's true name. He hopes to use Misa's Eyes to uncover the investigator's identity. The setup advances the cat-and-mouse dynamic between Kira and L.

L captures Misa due to evidence tied to the taped messages. The arrest creates tension as Light's own involvement could be exposed. The case tightens around Misa as the police close in.

To avoid confession, Light arranges for both himself and Misa to forfeit their Death Notes and lose their memories. Light buries his Death Note to hide his past actions. The plan buys time but leaves the truth still out of reach.

Rem passes the other Death Note to Kiyomi Takada, a reporter connected to the Kira case. Takada becomes a key accomplice, albeit unwittingly, within the media apparatus surrounding the case. The transfer ensures the killings can continue even without Light's memory.

Light and Misa are released from custody but kept under surveillance. Light discovers Takada's involvement and helps the police arrest her. By touching a Death Note, he regains his memories and resumes his killings.

Light uses a fragment of a Death Note hidden in his watch to kill Takada. The police, convinced by a fake rule about the 13-day schedule, exonerate Light and Misa. This ruse stalls the investigation and preserves Kira's operation.

L decides to test the 13-day rule by taking the task force to America. In response, Rem kills Watari and L to protect Misa from arrest. This act breaks Shinigami rules and accelerates the story toward its conclusion.

Ryuk kills Light after he is cornered by the police. L reveals that the Death Note Light used was a decoy and that the team had been surveilling him all along. The authorities cover up the truth, and L dies twenty days later; a year later Soichiro maintains the false story, Misa forgets the Death Note, and Ryuk laughs at Tokyo Tower.
