Sherlock Holmes, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., embarks on a thrilling investigation across Europe, unraveling a web of seemingly unconnected crimes that he suspects are all linked to the cunning Professor Moriarty, a devious criminal mastermind equally matched in intellect. After Moriarty orchestrates a heinous assassination attempt, Irene Adler, played by Rachel McAdams, falls victim to his schemes, her affections for Holmes rendering her a liability.
Meanwhile, Holmes joins his friend Dr. Watson, portrayed by Jude Law, and his brother Mycroft for Watson’s stag party. In a twist of fate, Holmes must save another of Moriarty’s targets, a fortune-telling gypsy named Sim. As the tension escalates, Holmes confronts Moriarty, who ominously warns that further investigation will put Watson’s life in jeopardy.
In a daring act, Holmes clandestinely boards the train taking Watson and his new wife, Mary, to their honeymoon, diverting Mary to safety while engaging in a fierce clash with Moriarty’s henchmen. Upon arriving in France, Holmes discloses that Sim’s brother, Rene, is the reason Moriarty has targeted her.
The trio travels to the opera in Paris, aiming to thwart Moriarty’s next move, but Holmes realizes too late that they have fallen into a trap; a hotel explosion claiming the lives of numerous businessmen was a decoy, masking a calculated assassination orchestrated by the sniper Colonel Sebastian Moran.
As Holmes and Watson follow leads linked to Moriarty’s nefarious business dealings, they uncover a plot to ignite a war for profit. In a tense showdown, they manage a daring escape. Just as they piece together Moriarty’s plot for a catastrophic incident at a peace summit, Holmes cleverly deduces that Moriarty has manipulated identities through convoluted experiments involving twins.
In a final game of wits, Holmes invites Moriarty for a chess match over a dramatic waterfall, where the tension rises to a deadly climax. As Holmes exposes a key account book revealing Moriarty’s dark enterprises, the final confrontation ends in a breathtaking fall into the depths below, seemingly sealing Moriarty’s fate.
In the aftermath, as Watson and Mary look forward to yet another honeymoon, a mysterious delivery hints at Holmes’ survival, culminating in a playful twist that leaves readers eager for their next adventure, marking the words “The End” with an unfinished question mark.
