Enishi seeks revenge because his sister Tomoe Yukishiro died as a result of Kenshin. Fifteen years earlier, Tomoe fell in love with Kenshin, but she was secretly a Shogunate spy and the fiancée of Akira Kiyosato, the man who gave Kenshin his first scar. When Tomoe tried to stop Kenshin from killing, she was killed instead, and Kenshin received his second scar defending her.

The jinchū note discovered early in the film foreshadows Enishi's personal vendetta, literally meaning 'human judgment.'
