Daag (1973) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Sunil kills Dheeraj in self-defense after discovering him attempting to assault Sonia. When Sunil arrives at the bungalow, he finds Dheeraj attacking his wife, and during the ensuing struggle to protect Sonia, Dheeraj is fatally wounded. The killing, while accidental in the heat of the moment, leads to Sunil's arrest and life sentence.

Foreshadowing: The couple's decision to seek shelter at the employer's bungalow, though driven by bad weather, places Sonia in isolation and vulnerable to danger.

The police van crashes while transporting Sunil to prison, and in the chaos, all occupants are presumed dead. Sunil manages to survive the accident, though the specific details of his survival are not detailed in the summary. This presumed death allows him to escape his previous identity and start life anew under the name Sudhir.

Foreshadowing: The van crash occurs shortly after Sunil's conviction, providing the opportunity for his identity to be officially erased.

Sunil agrees to marry Chandni because she was abandoned by her lover after becoming pregnant and needed a husband to provide legitimacy to her unborn child. In exchange for Chandni's help in establishing a new life with financial support, Sunil agrees to the marriage so the child would have a recognized father and legal status.

Foreshadowing: After the van crash, Sunil finds himself without identity or means, making him vulnerable to arrangements that offer survival in exchange for significant personal sacrifice.

After surviving the prison van crash, Sunil assumes the new identity of Sudhir to escape his past and start fresh. The crash officially killed his old identity, allowing him to become someone new. He uses this new identity to build a different life, eventually marrying Chandni and having a child with her.

Foreshadowing: The presumed death in the van crash provides the perfect cover for Sunil to abandon his original identity and avoid the legal consequences of his past actions.

Years after raising her son as a single mother and believing Sunil died in the van crash, Sonia eventually discovers that Sunil survived the accident and is living under the new name Sudhir. The summary does not specify the exact method of discovery, but the revelation comes as a major turning point that reopens her hopes and forces difficult questions about their relationship.

Foreshadowing: The story's structure builds toward this revelation as a key moment that will determine the emotional resolution for both characters.

At the end of the story, the law closes in on Sunil once again, forcing him to answer not only for his past crime of killing Dheeraj but also for the charge of bigamy. Since he married Chandni while still legally married to Sonia, he faces legal consequences for being married to two women simultaneously.

Foreshadowing: Sunil's decision to marry Chandni, though made with good intentions, creates a new legal problem that compounds his original situation.

• bigamy charge
• arrest
• legal consequences
• Chandni marriage

Chandni was a wealthy woman who was abandoned by her lover after becoming pregnant. Without a husband, her unborn child would be considered illegitimate in the social context of the time. By marrying Sunil (who had assumed the identity of Sudhir), she could provide her child with legal legitimacy and a recognized family name.

Foreshadowing: Chandni's vulnerability as an abandoned pregnant woman makes her willing to enter into a practical arrangement with a stranger who needs a new life.

• legitimacy
• social stigma
• Chandni background

The summary leaves the ultimate resolution of Sunil and Sonia's relationship uncertain. When Sonia discovers that Sunil survived and has built a new life with Chandni and a child, she faces the painful reality that her husband has another family. The story ends with Sunil confronting both his past crimes and the new bigamy charge, but the emotional outcome for the two original lovers remains ambiguous.

Foreshadowing: The narrative's dark and ambiguous tone, as noted in the meta notes, suggests the ending does not provide a clear romantic resolution.

Sunil receives a life sentence for killing Dheeraj Kapoor, even though the act occurred during what could be considered self-defense while protecting Sonia from assault. The courts likely viewed the killing as deliberate murder rather than justifiable self-defense, given that Dheeraj was overpowered during the struggle and died as a result of Sunil's actions.

Foreshadowing: The harsh sentence sets in motion the chain of events that follow, including the van crash and Sunil's assumed death.

After the van crash where Sunil is presumed dead, Sonia raises their son as a single mother and becomes a schoolteacher. She dedicates herself to her students while living quietly, keeping the past at bay. Her life represents resilience and sacrifice as she builds a new future without her husband, only to have that foundation shaken when she learns the truth about Sunil's survival.

Foreshadowing: Sonia's transition to teaching represents her attempt to create stability and purpose despite her loss.
