What Happens in Commitment: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Commitment (2013) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Nineteen-year-old Li Myung-hoon (Choi Seung-hyun) never imagined he would become a killer. Born into a privileged life in North Korea, his dream was to sit at a piano and pour his heart into music. Yet his world shatters when his father, a North Korean spy, dies in disgrace, and he and his younger sister Hye-in (Kim You-jung) are sent to a guilt-by-association forced labor camp. Their father’s superior, a high-ranking military official, Colonel Moon (Jo Sung-ha), presents a chilling option: return to the South as a technician—an assassin—and complete what his father couldn’t, and in exchange he and his sister will be released. Myung-hoon agrees after two years of grueling training that hardens him into a weapon rather than the pianist he once hoped to be.

Myung-hoon finally arrives in South Korea under the cover of a North Korean defect, and is adopted by a local couple who are themselves North Korean spies. He enrolls in a nearby high school and quietly adjusts to a life that feels both unfamiliar and dangerously close to the truth he hides. On the inside edge of the new world, he befriends Hye-in, a bullied schoolgirl who dreams of becoming a professional dancer and, importantly, shares the same name as his sister. As the mission unfolds, his orders become clear: locate and eliminate Big Dipper (Jung Ho-bin), a North Korean agent aligned with the opposing faction, with the ultimate aim of rescuing his sister and returning home.

Behind the scenes, North Korea is wracked by a power struggle as dictator Kim Jong Il’s health deteriorates, turning espionage into a crisis where loyalties are tested and every move could backfire. Myung-hoon’s precarious position grows increasingly fragile, and he must navigate Colonel Moon’s growing treachery while maintaining the delicate balance between a protector’s duty and a killer’s discipline. The story threads together personal loyalty, political intrigue, and the weight of a double life, pushing Myung-hoon toward choices that could alter not only his fate but the fate of those he loves. In this tense, character-driven thriller, the line between family devotion and the ruthless demands of a covert world becomes thinner and more dangerous with each passing day.

Commitment Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Commitment (2013): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Myung-hoon agree to become an assassin?

Myung-hoon agrees to become a "technician" (assassin) because Colonel Moon offers him a brutal bargain: complete a mission in South Korea to eliminate a rival North Korean agent, and in exchange, he and his sister Hye-in will be released from the guilt-by-association forced labor camp. With no other way to save his sister from the harsh camp conditions, he has little choice but to accept.

Foreshadowing: The story establishes early that Myung-hoon dreamed of becoming a pianist, not a killer, making his transformation into an assassin particularly tragic.

  • Hye-in
Q2

Who is Big Dipper and why must Myung-hoon kill him?

Big Dipper is a North Korean agent aligned with an opposing faction within the regime. Myung-hoon must eliminate him because completing this mission is the condition Colonel Moon set for releasing Myung-hoon and his sister from the labor camp. The target's identity directly ties to his sister's fate.

Q3

What is the guilt-by-association camp in North Korea?

The guilt-by-association camp is a type of North Korean prison where family members of disgraced individuals are sent as punishment. In the film, Myung-hoon and his sister Hye-in are imprisoned here simply because their father, a spy, died in disgrace. The camps are known for brutal conditions and forced labor.

Q4

Why does Colonel Moon betray Myung-hoon?

Colonel Moon's treachery stems from the political instability in North Korea as Kim Jong Il's health deteriorates. With power struggles intensifying, Moon's allegiances shift, making Myung-hoon a liability rather than an asset. His betrayal creates a deadly double-cross that threatens Myung-hoon's mission and his sister's life.

Foreshadowing: The timeline hints at Colonel Moon's treachery surfacing as North Korea's political crisis deepens.

Q5

What happened to Myung-hoon's father?

Q9

How does the political turmoil in North Korea affect Myung-hoon's mission?
