Jaiprakash and Janki are locked in a high-stakes divorce battle after marrying against Durgaprasad Bhardwaj’s wishes. The court grants the divorce, and Jai is allowed to visit Bharti only once a week. The separation places pressure on Janki and exposes the strains of middle-class life.

Jai tries to sneak into the Bhardwaj house to see Bharti but is caught and loses his visitation rights. The failed attempt deepens the rift with the Bhardwaj family and pushes Jai toward a risky plan to stay close to Bharti.

To get closer to Bharti, Jai disguises himself as a female nanny named Lakshmi Godbole. With the help of a drunk makeup artist named Joseph, he undergoes a complete transformation into an elderly Marathi woman. He aims to secure a nanny job with the Bhardwaj family.

Lakshmi goes for the nanny interview and is initially the last pick. When Bharti suffers an accident, Lakshmi immediately administers first aid and earns the family's respect. Her competence helps her land the job.

Jai, as Lakshmi, settles into the Bhardwaj household and crafts plausible stories to keep his dual life from clashing with his real schedule. Only Bharti and Joseph know Lakshmi's true identity. Banwarilal Pandit, the household secretary, dislikes Lakshmi and resents her entry.

Durgaprasad decides to pursue Janki's remarriage to Dr Rohit. In the market, Janki and Rohit are attacked, and Lakshmi saves Janki's life and modesty.

On learning of Rohit's cowardice, Durgaprasad changes his mind about the remarriage. Lakshmi exposes a theft by the Bhardwaj maid, leading to the maid's dismissal. Banwarilal then has to accept that a male cook will be appointed.

Jai reconnects with Shiraz, a Muslim restaurant chef now doing menial work. Lakshmi introduces Shiraz as Pandit Shivraj Sharma, a mute Brahmin cook, to the Bhardwaj family, and Shiraz remains unaware of Lakshmi's real identity.

Janki enjoys Lakshmi's companionship but still harbors resentment toward Jai. Jai faces rent pressure from his landlord, Hari, who also falls for Lakshmi. Ratna, a struggling woman, tries to win Jai's affection, while Durgaprasad begins to fall for Lakshmi and even proposes.

Jai, as Lakshmi, tells Durgaprasad that Lakshmi's husband has left and converted to Christianity. He also fabricates stories about Lakshmi's supposed husband to Hari and Banwarilal, manipulating perceptions to protect his cover.

Banwarilal intensifies efforts to discredit Lakshmi, but Durgaprasad is swayed by Lakshmi's message that religion and caste should not matter. Banwarilal also exposes Shiraz's cover, creating a setback, though Durgaprasad reluctantly keeps the cook on.

Shiraz tries to force Lakshmi to marry Durgaprasad and threatens to reveal the truth by setting himself on fire with kerosene. Jai is forced to reveal his true identity to prevent catastrophe. Banwarilal convinces Janki that Lakshmi is promiscuous, driving Janki to leave her father's house.

Janki leaves to reconcile with Jai, but a misreading of events makes her think Jai is promiscuous. She attempts suicide after seeing Ratna waiting and Lakshmi's clothes scattered. Jai/Lakshmi rushes to save her, reveals his true self, and the couple reconciles.

To tie up loose ends, they persuade Banwari that Lakshmi is dead. Joseph nearly hints at the truth, but Jai hushes him, declaring that Lakshmi will live in the hearts of those who knew her. Jai and Janki remarry.
