Jeetu, the son of a retired teacher Jaidev Prasad, is deep in debt after a string of failed ventures. He ends his engagement with Pooja and plans to end his life by jumping into the sea to claim insurance money that could help his father pay the debts. He is rescued by two fishermen, Gundya and Bandya, who save him and mistake him for mute and deaf.
Gundya owes money to a Gujarati businessman, Prabhat Singh Chauhan, who takes away Gundya’s boat. Gundya cleverly convinces Prabhat that Jeetu is his loving nephew, and leaves both Jeetu and Bandya in Prabhat’s house as collateral until the debt is paid. Shruti is Prabhat’s niece and is mute but not deaf, and her overprotective brother, Mangal Singh Chauhan, wants to see her married; yet her muteness makes her an undesirable match.
One night, Shruti and Meenakshi learn Jeetu’s secret and persuade him to break off Shruti’s undesirable engagement to keep his secret. Shruti confesses her love for Jeetu. Mangal approves their marriage after Jeetu reveals he is not deaf and mute. Later, Mangal sends Gundya and Bandya with a suitcase of money to Jeetu’s family to secure their financial well-being, but during the delivery they inadvertently reveal that Jeetu is alive. Jaidev Prasad arrives at Prabhat’s house during Jeetu and Shruti’s engagement and sees him alive.
Jaidev Prasad urges Jeetu to return home and marry Pooja. Jeetu goes back to his family, but they insist he must marry Pooja, and Gundya and Bandya bring him back. On the day of the wedding, the family intrudes to compel him to marry Pooja. But when Pooja learns that Shruti is mute, she changes her mind and tells Jeetu to marry Shruti. Jeetu and Shruti marry and live happily.
