The story begins in 1969, where a young Frank Abagnale Jr. is living in New Rochelle, New York with his parents. Tension arises in the household as family financial struggles intensify, leading to a life-altering divorce between his parents.

After his parents' divorce, Frank, feeling neglected and abandoned, decides to run away. Using forged checks gifted to him by his father, he embarks on a journey to escape his troubled home life.

Frank quickly adapts to his new life, taking on the identity of an airline pilot. He forges Pan Am payroll checks, allowing him to live luxuriously, stay in hotels, and dine at expensive restaurants without any real income.

FBI agent Carl Hanratty first becomes aware of Frank's exploits and begins his pursuit. Despite his superiors dismissing the case as trivial, Carl becomes increasingly engrossed in capturing the cunning con artist.

Carl finally locates Frank at a hotel, but Frank cleverly outsmarts him by posing as an agent of the U.S. Secret Service. This incident solidifies the game of cat-and-mouse between Frank and Carl.
