As 12-year-old Madeline Rose “Maddy” Phillips navigates her world with an unquenchable love for climbing, she finds herself caught between her ambitions and the cautionary shadows of her father’s past. Maddy’s father, Tom (played by Sam Robards), suffered a devastating fall from over 100 feet that has left him paralyzed from the neck down. His wife, Molly (portrayed by Jennifer Beals), is gripped by fear and forbids Maddy from engaging in climbing activities. On top of this, Tom’s paralysis is worsened by previous injuries, leading to the need for an experimental surgery that promises hope — albeit at a staggering cost of $250,000, a sum that their insurance refuses to cover.
As desperation mounts, Molly’s employer, Harderbach Financial, stubbornly declines to provide a loan, even with her role as a security system designer. It is in the heat of this crisis that Maddy devises a daring plan to steal money from the very bank that has turned them down. Putting her mother’s expertise and knowledge of the bank’s layout to use, Maddy enlists the help of her friends — Gus, a talented mechanic, and Austin, a tech-savvy filmmaker — to pull off an ambitious heist.
Maddy charms her friends with a half of her beloved friendship necklace, while skillfully pretending to have romantic feelings for both. This manipulation convinces them to join her on what would soon prove to be a reckless venture, which coincides with a high-profile gathering hosted by Donald Brisbane, the bank’s president. Adding tension to the situation, Maddy takes her infant brother, Max, with her under the guise of babysitting, complicating the already precarious operation.
Inside the bank, Maddy and Gus engage in a stealthy infiltration while Austin remains outside, coordinating their efforts and ensuring the security measures stay offline. However, Maddy faces a critical setback when her climbing gear malfunctions, forcing her to take an exhilarating free climb up to the vault door and inadvertently triggering a countdown timer.
With the clock ticking, Maddy successfully cracks the vault’s code, “Madeline,” and escapes with the coveted $250,000. In their rush to exit, they forget the escape code, accidentally setting off alarms. They narrowly dodge the bank’s Rottweilers and manage to evade capture thanks to Chad, Gus’ older brother, who comically tases himself in the confusion.
As chaos unfolds, Molly arrives and finds herself distracted, which allows Brisbane to seize the moment and dismiss a long-time family friend, Hartmann, from his position. Brisbane’s guest, Francois Nuffaut, cleverly shifts the blame onto Brisbane himself for hosting a party before the security system was adequately functional, rescuing Molly from embarrassment.
In the aftermath of their heist, Gus and Austin grapple with the revelation that Maddy had been deceiving them all along, her true motives unveiled through a matching necklace set. This shocking discovery fractures their friendship, compelling them to go their separate ways as they deal with the emotional aftermath.
However, fate brings them back together amid a dramatic police chase, where Gus, Austin, and Maddy combine their strengths to evade capture and triumphantly navigate the situation, albeit on the wrong side of the law.
With Maddy’s friends supporting her at the hospital, they prepare to finance Tom’s life-saving surgery. Yet, unaware of Maddy’s covert operation, Molly pieces together the truth, realizing her daughter’s actions stemmed from a noble desire to help.
In light of this understanding, Molly swiftly crafts a cover story that absolves Maddy of any guilt while protecting her own reputation as chief of security. As they leave the hospital, a swarm of journalists captures the moment, eager to report on the sensational family drama.
In the wake of these trials, Molly reaches out to Maddy, forgiving her for the deception in favor of family healing and unity. The public responds with overwhelming sympathies and donations to assist with Tom’s surgery. Meanwhile, Brisbane faces repercussions from his employers, while Hartmann ascends to become the new bank president, extending support to Maddy and her friends.
Fast forward three months, and Tom celebrates his recovery thanks to the kindness of strangers. As for the love triangle between Maddy, Gus, and Austin, the three friends engage in lighthearted banter, each vying for the title of “best boyfriend.” The road ahead may be filled with uncertainty, but one thing is clear — this trio will face it all together, their bond having emerged even stronger from the trials they’ve endured.
