The Strategic Air Command moves to introduce the B-52 Stratofortress as its new primary manned strategic weapon. At Castle AFB, California, MSgt. Chuck Brennan clashes with his younger commanding officer, Lt. Col. Jim Herlihy, over their approaches to flight operations. Brennan's memory of a Korean War incident colors his view of Herlihy from the start.

Herlihy begins dating Brennan's daughter Lois, straining the professional relationship on base. Brennan insists Lois end the romance to keep personal and command dynamics separate. Tensions rise as both family loyalties and military duties pull in conflicting directions.

Brennan, Herlihy, and the engineering team press to solve a string of technical problems delaying the B-52's deployment. They run test after test, dealing with hydraulic quirks, control glitches, and fuel logistics under tight schedules. The pressure to deliver a safe, reliable aircraft weighs heavily on everyone.

During a routine test flight around Castle, the fore landing gear jams due to a hydraulic fault, forcing a wary repair in the gear bay. An attempted mid-air refueling with a KC-97 fails when the aerial intake door jams, risking an early fuel exhaustion. The crew works under pressure to repair the fault and complete the sortie just before fuel runs dry.

On a top-secret test flight to Africa, the B-52 is refueled mid-air, but a control panel short-circuits and triggers a fire. Herlihy orders everyone to bail out, and ejects Brennan when he refuses to abandon the bomber. The remaining crew members bail out safely as the aircraft is forced to contend with the danger and return toward base.

Following the flight, the burning bomber lands safely at Castle AFB. Recovery teams rush to secure the wreckage and salvage what they can from the burning aircraft. The search parties scour the surrounding area to locate all crew members except Brennan, who remains unaccounted for.

Following a hunch, Herlihy locates the base's chief aircraft mechanic, who is severely injured in remote backcountry. He arranges a high-risk helicopter airlift to transport the mechanic to the base hospital. The daring recovery underscores Herlihy's commitment to the crew's survival.

While recovering, Brennan realizes that Herlihy risked his life to bring him home. He reevaluates his earlier judgment and begins to respect his commanding officer. The conflict between personal animosity and professional duty begins to resolve.

Brennan comes to terms with Lois's relationship and agrees that she and Herlihy belong together. He acknowledges that loyalty to family can align with respect for leadership. This reconciliation marks a turning point for his view of the base's hierarchy.

With discharge papers ready to sign, Brennan faces a crucible between civilian money and military duty. He weighs his love of flying and loyalty to the team, ultimately deciding to continue his career in the USAF. This choice reaffirms his commitment to the mission and to the people he serves with.
