The Strategic Air Command is poised to deploy the B-52 Stratofortress as its primary manned strategic weapon, a milestone that plays out at Castle Air Force Base in California with the 329th Bomb Squadron. MSgt. Chuck Brennan [Karl Malden] harbors a long-standing distrust of his commanding officer, Lt. Col. Jim Herlihy [Efrem Zimbalist Jr.], a tension rooted in a Korean War incident. The friction deepens when Herlihy begins dating Brennan’s daughter, Lois Brennan [Natalie Wood], forcing Brennan to confront the personal and professional lines that divide them.

As the colleagues press forward, they wrestle with the daunting technical challenges of bringing the B-52 into service. A routine round-the-base test flight reveals a hydraulically jammed fore landing gear, forcing a crew member to crawl into the gear bay to attempt a repair. An attempt to extend the aircraft’s range via a KC-97 Stratotanker goes awry when the door covering the aerial fuel intake jams. Then, on a top-secret test flight to Africa, after mid-air refueling, a control panel shorts, igniting a fire aboard the bomber. Herlihy orders an emergency bailout and ejects Brennan when he refuses to abandon the plane.

Brennan manages to guide the burning bomber back to Castle AFB, yet the rescue teams recover everyone except Brennan. Following a hunch, Herlihy discovers his chief aircraft mechanic badly injured and airlifts him by helicopter from a remote area to the base hospital. While Brennan is recovering, he comes to see that his assumptions about Herlihy were wrong, recognizing that his daughter should be free to reunite with the man who commanded the mission and his crew under extreme pressure. The veteran pilot also faces a choice between a lucrative civilian career and continued service in the United States Air Force. When discharge papers arrive, Brennan chooses to remain in the USAF, reaffirming his commitment to duty, country, and the family he loves, a decision that echoes through the base as the program presses forward.
