The whole story of Flight Crew (2016) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Alexey Gushchin, a skilled and ambitious military pilot, finds himself embarking on a significant mission to deliver a cargo of supplies intended for charity. However, there is an additional layer to this task; the plane is also loaded with cars meant for a general whose friend is celebrating his daughter's wedding. As the journey unfolds, Alexey realizes that navigating through a storm is proving to be a substantial challenge for the aircraft. Faced with a dire situation, he makes the tough decision to dispose of one of the cars during mid-air in order to lighten the load. Unfortunately, this act brings serious repercussions; he is barred from piloting military aircraft. Seeking redemption, he turns to his father, Igor, a renowned aircraft engineer, for guidance and support in reclaiming his spot in the skies.

In pursuit of his goal, Alexey applies to a passenger airline where he faces an examination, overseen by Leonid Zinchenko. During the simulation test, although Alexey showcases impressive flying capabilities, he ultimately fails when he can't prevent a simulated crash into a building while attempting to land. Under pressure from his superiors, Zinchenko attempts the test again but also crashes, leading him to hire Alexey as a second pilot-trainee on the Tu-204SM, alongside attendant Andrey under Zinchenko's guidance. As they navigate the complexities of their new roles, Zinchenko is grappling with personal issues stemming from his estrangement from his son, Valera, who has grown disillusioned with education. Simultaneously, Alexey embarks on a budding romance with Alexandra Kuzmina, another pilot.

Their challenges escalate when they are tasked with evacuating tourists from an African nation embroiled in turmoil. However, Alexey is taken aback when he discovers that Zinchenko has denied local refugees passage on the aircraft, asserting that they must strictly adhere to orders. Tensions rise as Alexey confronts a wealthy passenger unwilling to obey safety protocols, culminating in a confrontation that results in his dismissal from the airline. This incident strains his relationship with Alexandra, adding further complications to his life.

In an unexpectedly fortuitous turn of events, Alexey reconnects with Zinchenko, who, appreciating Alexey's talent, wants him back on his team. Zinchenko plans to involve Valera on the next flight in hopes of rekindling his interest in education as well.

The ensuing flight to Southeast Asia leads the crew to a stark reality when they receive notification of a volcanic eruption on the Aleutian Island known as Kanwoo. Upon arrival, the crew is met with devastation; many lives have been lost, and there are numerous casualties. Their mission swiftly shifts to evacuating those still trapped. As Gushchin arrives at the airport, disaster strikes—an earthquake wreaks havoc on the infrastructure, crippling one of the runways while the other is engulfed in flames.

In a desperate attempt to aid the stranded victims, Alexey, Andrey, and Valera maneuver two minibuses toward the location where passengers are stranded. However, their return journey is abruptly halted as lava flows block their route. Andrey heroically ensures all passengers escape an impending disaster, though he sacrifices his own vehicle to avoid being consumed by the fiery flow. The trio successfully returns on foot to the airport, only to discover the Tu-204 is abandoned, and Zinchenko, along with the original group of passengers, is missing.

Faced with the imminent threat of a volcanic eruption, Gushchin makes a bold decision to utilize the damaged runway covered in burning oil for takeoff. After a dramatic follow-up where a water tower extinguishes the flames, he manages to successfully take off, even as the plane struggles with engine fires caused by the volcanic ash. They establish contact with Zinchenko's aircraft, where Valera confronts his father over the unjust orders and declares, >"I will never forgive you."

As their fuel begins to dwindle due to the damaged tanks, the crew learns there is only one possible airport—Elizovo—where a brutal storm looms. Igor, having traced his son’s journey and now at the airline's headquarters, offers a crucial plan: they can transfer the passengers from the An-26 to the Tu-204 using a rescue cage, which contains more fuel. Alexey agrees, bolstered by the support of Valera and the remaining passengers.

The operation begins with the two planes aligning at a safe altitude, where successful evacuations occur. However, tragedy strikes during the third attempt when the ropes of the cage snap, leading to the untimely deaths of eleven passengers. As tensions exacerbate, Zinchenko decides to evacuate the An-26 using a cable just before it is too late. The crew, faced with dire conditions at Elizovo, chooses to land despite orders to the contrary, risking it all. Gushchin wrestles with his fear of landing a malfunctioning aircraft in the storm, but Zinchenko reminds him of his capabilities.

In a dramatic finale, their landing is precarious, with the landing gear malfunctioning and an engine separating from the wing. Yet, against all odds, everyone survives the ordeal. Zinchenko praises Alexey, and Valera finally reconciles with his father. As emergency services rush to the scene, the survivors express mixed emotions of joy and mourning for those lost.

In the aftermath, Alexey and Alexandra celebrate their marriage, and Zinchenko has mended his relationship with Valera. Despite their heroic actions, the airline's director fires them for disregarding orders, but a glimmer of hope appears as he contacts Aeroflot. Gushchin and Zinchenko are offered opportunities as flight interns, while Alexandra charts her own course as a pilot in the same respected airline.

Flight Crew Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Flight Crew (2016): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why was Alexey Gushchin dismissed from military aviation?

Alexey was banned from flying military aircraft after he made an unauthorized decision to dump a luxury car from his cargo plane mid-flight. The plane was carrying supplies for charity alongside cars intended for a general's friend's daughter's wedding, and when a storm made the load dangerously heavy, he jettisoned one car to save the aircraft. Although the plane was saved, his superiors punished him for the reckless act.

Q2

Why did Alexey fail the airline pilot simulation test?

During his examination with Leonid Zinchenko, Alexey demonstrated impressive flying skills but ultimately failed because he could not prevent a simulated crash into a building during a landing attempt. The test was designed to evaluate how a pilot handles impossible situations, and his inability to find a safe resolution cost him the position he was seeking.

Q3

Why did Zinchenko hire Alexey even after he failed the simulation?

Zinchenko hired Alexey after he himself crashed during a demonstration flight under pressure from his peers, proving that even experienced pilots could fail the same test. Recognizing Alexey's raw talent and the unfair nature of the evaluation, he offered him a position as a second pilot-trainee on the Tu-204SM, giving him a chance to prove his worth in real conditions.

Q4

Why did Zinchenko refuse to let local refugees board the evacuation flight in Africa?

Zinchenko strictly followed his orders, which instructed the crew to evacuate only the tourists and not the local civilians caught in the conflict. Although Alexey was outraged by the decision to leave desperate people behind, Zinchenko prioritized his career and mission compliance over humanitarian aid, a choice that later became a point of deep moral conflict within the story.

Q5

Why was Alexey fired from the airline after the passenger confrontation?

Alexey was dismissed after he physically confronted a wealthy passenger who refused to follow safety protocols onboard the flight. Although his intent was to protect the crew and other travelers, the airline considered his aggressive response a serious breach of conduct. The dismissal also strained his relationship with Alexandra, who worried about his impulsive behavior.

Q6

Why did Zinchenko bring his estranged son Valera on the rescue flight?

Zinchenko invited Valera on the Southeast Asia flight as a personal attempt to reconnect with his disillusioned son and rekindle his interest in education and a meaningful career. By exposing Valera to real aviation work and the responsibility of helping others, Zinchenko hoped the experience would inspire him to take his future more seriously.

Q7

How did Alexey manage to take off from a runway covered in burning oil?

After the earthquake destroyed one runway and set the other ablaze with burning oil, Alexey was forced to use the shorter, fire-covered strip as his only option. In a stroke of luck, the heat triggered a nearby water tower to burst, dousing the flames and clearing a path just in time. He then pushed the Tu-204 to its limits and lifted off before the volcano could consume the airport.

Q8

How did the crew transfer passengers between two planes in mid-air?

Following Igor Gushchin's plan, the Tu-204 and the An-26 aligned at a safe altitude and used a rescue cage connected by ropes to shuttle passengers from the fuel-starved An-26 to the better-supplied Tu-204. Alexey and the team executed the maneuver three times, but the ropes snapped during the third transfer, resulting in the deaths of eleven passengers who fell from the cage.

Q9

Why did Valera tell his father he would never forgive him?

Valera confronted Zinchenko over the radio about his father's earlier decision to deny passage to refugees in Africa simply because they were not on the official passenger list. Witnessing the suffering on Kanwoo and hearing about the eleven passengers lost during the transfer pushed Valera to reject his father's cold obedience to orders, declaring he could never forgive that moral failure.

Q10

Why did the crew choose to land at Elizovo despite the dangerous storm?

After the volcanic ash damaged the Tu-204's fuel tanks, the crew learned that Elizovo was the only airport within their remaining range. Although a brutal storm was raging and headquarters ordered them to stay airborne, Zinchenko reminded Alexey of his capabilities, and the team chose to risk the landing rather than run out of fuel mid-flight.

Q11

How did everyone survive the final landing with a malfunctioning aircraft?

The Tu-204 suffered a failing landing gear and an engine that tore away from the wing during the rough touchdown at Elizovo, yet Alexey managed to keep the crippled plane under enough control to avoid a catastrophic crash. The combination of his piloting skill, Zinchenko's steady guidance, and sheer luck allowed every person aboard to walk away alive.

Q12

Why were the crew fired for surviving the disaster?

Despite saving dozens of lives, Alexey, Zinchenko, and the rest of the crew were dismissed because they had repeatedly disobeyed direct orders, including evacuating people not on the official manifest, landing at Elizovo against instructions, and undertaking the mid-air transfer without authorization. The airline director prioritized protocol over heroism, stripping them of their positions in the aftermath.

Q13

Why did Andrey sacrifice his van to the lava flow?

While returning to Kanwoo Airport with rescued passengers, Andrey found their escape route blocked by an advancing lava flow. To prevent the passengers from being consumed by the fire, he drove his minibus directly into the lava's path, using the vehicle as a barrier that halted the flow long enough for everyone to escape on foot back to the airport.

Q14

Why did Zinchenko insist on evacuating the An-26 right before the volcano erupted?

After the rescue cage snapped and cost eleven lives, Zinchenko decided to use a backup cable system to evacuate the remaining passengers from the An-26 just moments before the volcanic eruption reached the damaged aircraft. His urgent call to action came from recognizing that any further delay would result in the total loss of everyone still onboard the smaller plane.

Q15

What happens to Alexey and Zinchenko after they are fired?

Although they were dismissed for disobeying orders, the airline director personally contacted Aeroflot and recommended the crew based on their heroic actions. As a result, Alexey and Zinchenko were offered positions as flight interns at the prestigious airline, while Alexandra, who had also been fired, secured a role as a pilot at the same carrier, marking a hopeful new chapter for all of them.
