Gerald urges Rita to evacuate George to the countryside for safety. Before he leaves, George receives pocket money from his grandfather and his Saint Christopher medallion from his mother, a keepsake tied to his father. The family braces for the possible dangers of the coming bombing.

George is evacuated amidst the Blitz, leaving with mixed emotions. He is furious at his mother for sending him away and he says goodbye at the station, leaving Rita distraught. The bustle of the city around them hints at the looming danger.

On the train, several boys taunt George for the texture of his hair, calling him a dog. A girl opposite him comes to his defense, and he recalls a line from his grandfather that helps him stand up to the bullies. The moment marks a small victory amid fear.

George decides to escape and jumps off the train to return to his mother in London. He stows away on an eastbound goods train and meets three brothers along the way. He shares his only food, a strawberry jam sandwich, with them.

The brothers’ escape takes a grim turn when one is killed by an oncoming train. George uses the coins given by his grandfather to catch a bus back to London, seeking the safety of home after the ordeal.

A flashback reveals a racial insult George endures after a street cricket match. Another memory shows Marcus gifting Rita the Saint Christopher medallion, revealing its lineage and the family’s history amid a moment of tension and danger.

George arrives in London but cannot immediately find his home in Stepney. He is found by Ife, an ARP warden from Nigeria, who brings him to a shelter that reflects the area’s multiethnic reality. The encounter marks his entry into a new, diverse community.

Inside the shelter, a mix of families lives alongside a Sikh neighbor whose privacy is challenged, leading to tension. Ife intervenes with a speech that urges unity and resilience, and he makes sure George goes to bed with a sense of safety for the night.

The next morning, George learns that Ife was killed while helping a woman evacuate her house during the bombing. The loss of his protector deepens the danger and the sense of uncertainty around his safety.

Back at the factory, Rita is summoned by her manager and told that George did not reach his final destination and apparently jumped from the train. She is furious and rushes to find him, risking her job to bring him back.

Hungry and vulnerable, George is approached by Jess, a thief who pretends to help but intends to steal from a damaged jewelry store and a bombed-out club. He is threatened but manages to escape and seeks shelter overnight on the tracks in an overcrowded underground station.

As dawn approaches, the Tube station floods and the gates are locked, trapping people inside. George, with others, faces the danger but finally escapes when the gates are opened, joining the exodus to safety above ground.

George wakes in a strange bed and discovers a missing-child notice posted for him. He escapes through a window and makes his way back to Clifford Lane in Stepney, where his building has been bombed. The rescue of the family cat Olly is followed by a bittersweet reunion with his mother Rita among the rubble as they try to cling to each other.
