Mata Nui was driven into a deep coma by his envious brother Makuta, who wanted to rule the island himself. After creating the island and its inhabitants, Mata Nui fell into slumber, allowing Makuta to begin his reign of terror over the land.

The Toa of Light is Takua, a Matoran villager who embarks on the quest to find the seventh Toa. After Jaller sacrifices himself to protect Takua from a Rahkshi, Takua dons the Mask of Light and transforms into Takanuva, the Toa of Light.
