Mata Nui, Michael Dorn (voice), the Great Spirit of the Matoran universe, is exiled from his home by his brother, Makuta Teridax. Teridax takes over Mata Nui’s colossal robot body, while Mata Nui’s spirit is cast into the Mask of Life, which crash-lands on the barren world of Bara Magna. He forges a new body and befriends a Scarabax beetle named Click.
Mata Nui quickly finds trouble when he is attacked by a member of the Bone Hunters. He then meets an Agori named Metus (voice), who warns him about the dangerous tribes that roam Bara Magna. Metus guides Mata Nui to the village of Vulcanus, where gladiatorial contests help settle disputes between communities.
There, Mata Nui intervenes in a fight and befriends a seasoned Glatorian fighter, Ackar (voice). The trio—Mata Nui, Ackar, and a Glatorian named Kiina (voice)—set out toward Tajun, only to be ambushed by an alliance of Bone Hunters and Skrall. The assault destroys Tajun, forcing the group to question whether a hidden traitor is guiding their foes due to the coordinated, intelligent attacks.
They rescue an injured Glatorian named Gresh (voice) and uncover evidence tying Mata Nui to Bara Magna. Kiina leads them to a cavern where Gresh is tended, and within that shelter they meet Berix (voice), an Agori who joins the team. Berix’s technical know-how helps Mata Nui repair and repurpose the Glatorians’ weapons, powered by the Mask of Life.
With renewed strength, the group travels to Tesara and helps unite the villages against the Skrall–Bone Hunter alliance. Kiina grows suspicious of Berix, but the real defector, Metus, captures them. Mata Nui confronts the Skrall leader, Tuma (voice), defeats him, and frees Kiina and Berix. The unlikely alliance—Mata Nui, Ackar, Kiina, Gresh, Berix—joins forces to battle the Skrall and Bone Hunters.
When Metus tries to escape after the clash is finished, Mata Nui uses the power of his mask to reveal Metus’s true nature, turning him into a snake. The combined efforts of the Agori, Glatorians, and Scarabax beetles pave the way for rebuilding a large robotic body, signaling Mata Nui’s renewed hope of reclaiming his home from Teridax.
A Skrall shield later bears a map that hints at the next chapter in Mata Nui’s journey, and the Glatorian warriors pledge their aid as he prepares to retake his home from Teridax. The story closes with a sense of cautious optimism: Bara Magna has proven its resilience, and Mata Nui’s path back to his rightful place has begun to unfold.
