His ambition was to claim power and dominion over the entire realm that Mata Nui had once governed, betraying his brother in a ruthless quest for control.

The seeds of this betrayal are rooted in Teridax's long-standing jealousy of his brother's position as the Great Spirit.

After being betrayed by Teridax, Mata Nui's spirit was sealed inside the Mask of Life, which was expelled from his body. The mask drifted through space and crashed on the distant world of Bara Magna, where Mata Nui's essence was transported into a newly forged body made from the planet's materials.

The Mask of Life's journey through space was predetermined by Teridax's exile of Mata Nui's spirit.

Metus, the Agori guide who initially helped Mata Nui, was the traitor. He secretly allied with the Skrall and Bone Hunters, providing them with intelligence about Mata Nui's movements and plans, which allowed the enemies to stage coordinated ambushes including the destruction of Tajun.

Metus offered to guide Mata Nui from the very beginning, raising questions about his true motivations.

The Mask of Life contains Mata Nui's life essence and significant supernatural abilities.
