Romy Mathis, the ambitious CEO of a thriving tech firm in the heart of New York City, finds herself increasingly disillusioned with the state of her intimate life with her husband, Jacob, who is a passionate theater director. The monotony and disconnect in their relationship weigh heavily on her, and as fate would have it, a seemingly innocuous incident sends her life spiraling into uncharted territory. One fateful morning, while on her way to the office, Romy narrowly escapes a traumatic encounter with an aggressive dog. She is saved by a young man named Samuel, whose charm and confidence are palpable, and who subsequently becomes her intern through the company’s mentorship program.
From the get-go, Samuel reveals an interest in Romy that escalates quickly. He selects her to be his guide in navigating the corporate world, but during a private meeting, things take an unexpected turn. Samuel boldly propositions her, and after a moment of hesitation, she succumbs to the mounting tension and kisses him. This moment marks a significant turning point in Romy’s life as she grapples with conflicting feelings of desire and guilt. What starts as an illicit kiss soon evolves into a series of clandestine meetings in hotel rooms, where the lines of power and submission are starkly drawn. Romy finds herself playing the submissive role, and Samuel takes on the dominant one, blurring the lines of their professional relationship.
The affair pushes both of them to confront their anxieties and ambitions in a captivating game of emotional chess. However, Samuel’s actions grow more brazen when he surprises Romy at her family’s country home, under the guise of returning a forgotten laptop. This unexpected intrusion prompts a fiery confrontation, where Romy makes it clear how vital her family is to her. In the heat of the argument, Samuel threatens to tarnish her reputation, declaring that he could easily get her fired with a simple phone call. This threat rattles Romy, leading her to disclose to Jacob her frustrations regarding their intimacy, including her feelings of sexual inadequacy.
In a desperate bid to maintain her secret affair, Romy reaches out to Samuel, but her ire peaks anew when he shows up unexpectedly at her home with Esme, a colleague who works under her, to celebrate her daughter’s birthday. Esme, revealing she knows about the affair, pressures Romy to take action—either end the relationship with Samuel or risk her career. This ultimatum leaves Romy torn; she ultimately confesses everything to Jacob, resulting in a dramatic fallout where he squares off against Samuel in a physical altercation and suffers a panic attack, forced to reconcile his own feelings of inadequacy.
As tensions mount both at work and home, Romy must confront the consequences of her choices. When a Board member approaches her, suggesting that Samuel has accepted a job in Japan, he insinuates her involvement in his departure, which infuriates Romy as she declares her unwillingness to be intimidated. The unraveling of her life leads her back to the arms of Jacob, where they attempt to revive their marriage by experimenting with the very acts that transpired during her affair, ultimately leading Romy to experience the pleasure she had long been denied.
Through a whirlwind of lust, betrayal, and self-discovery, the narrative reflects on the complexities of relationships and the struggles of navigating personal desires against societal expectations. As Romy’s journey unfolds, she embodies the quintessential conflict between professional ambition and personal fulfillment, a theme resonant in today’s intricate world of modern relationships.
